SUMMARY

The Manufacturing Engineer works as part of a cross-functional team including other engineers, as well as tool & die, production, maintenance, safety, and purchasing personnel, in the design and implementation of tools, fixtures, programs and equipment in a high-mix manufacturing environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Work on-site in Hastings, Michigan (not a remote position)
  2. Collaboratively design cost-effective and ergonomically sound manufacturing layouts of new and existing product lines and work processes
  3. Investigate and resolve operational problems, such as material use variances or bottlenecks
  4. Apply continuous improvement methods to enhance manufacturing quality, reliability, and cost-effectiveness
  5. Determine root causes of failures and recommend changes in designs, tolerances, or processing methods using data-driven procedures
  6. Prepare verbal and written reports summarizing information or trends related to manufacturing performance
  7. Identify and assess various problems and departures from established manufacturing standards and best practices, using methods that include, but are not limited to, time studies
  8. Research solutions and make recommendations to Chief Engineer and other management on related purchases and contracts
  9. Develop and maintain management information, planning, and control systems
  10. Review production program equipment, hardware, and tooling; make recommendations for repair or replacement
  11. Manage projects with outside vendors to ensure cost and scope are appropriately followed
  12. Train production personnel in new or existing methods; assist with preparation of operator work instructions
  13. Comply with and adhere to applicable safety and work rules and requirements
  14. Comply with and adhere to all applicable ISO standards

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity
  • Use of computers
  • Ability to use hand tools and understand operation of shop machines such as CNC machines
  • Good written and verbal communication, with the ability to easily shift between discussing complex concepts in both technical and non-technical terms
  • Frequent standing
  • Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to tolerate non-air conditioned manufacturing environment that can present fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, vibration, and loud noise environment
  • Must wear personal protective equipment as determined appropriate by company management

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE and QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors degree in mechanical or industrial engineering, or related discipline
  • At least three (3) years of related experience
  • Ability to build strong relationships with co-workers and vendors
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with demonstrated ability to appropriately prioritize projects
  • Must be able to work through complex problems while appropriately managing risk
  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimal direct supervision, and to effectively complete projects on short turn-around times
  • Mechanical aptitude and understanding
  • Proficient in Windows OS and software
  • Knowledgeable in use of SolidWorks
  • Professional demeanor, good interpersonal skills, and ability to work well with many different personalities
  • Eagerness and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
