Many of our projects involve evaluating complex subsurface conditions and developing recommendations to mitigate geologic hazards in order to facilitate site development or construction. We are seeking an important team member to perform a vital role for the firm as a staff geologist or staff engineer.

As a representative of the firm, excellent customer service skills, professionalism, and diplomacy are required in all communications with clients, colleagues, vendors, designers, and contractors. Additionally, as a technical representative of the firm, thoughtfulness, common sense, a critical eye, and an attention to detail are mandatory to provide quality solutions for our clients.

Being that we are a small firm, our employees are exposed to all aspects of the business and projects, which include developing scopes of work, preparing budgets, conducting subsurface exploration programs, mapping geologic/engineering site conditions, performing laboratory testing, drafting, analyzing collected data, and writing reports or letters. Additional administrative responsibilities may include overseeing organization of our in-house laboratory, file management, editing documents, record keeping, telephone answering, social media marketing, and equipment or vehicle maintenance operations.

Successfully performing this role means providing assistance and support to technical and administrative staff and colleagues in order to facilitate optimization of billable time and on-time delivery of quality work products and solutions to our clients.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Schedule fieldwork with subcontractors (drillers, backhoe excavators, and etc.) and obtain necessary permits from local agencies

  • Perform oversight of drilling and test pit/trench operations including logging borings/pits/trenches and the installation of piezometers or slope inclinometers

  • Create accurate slope profiles and field maps

  • Document and record field data and observations in a clear and concise manner

  • Develop thorough knowledge of field subsurface exploration and mapping procedures

  • Accurately conduct laboratory testing

  • Prepare accurate and quality illustrations of boring logs, maps, cross-sections, and conceptual design figures for publication

  • Provide assistance with analyzing, evaluating, and interpreting collected data and measurements

  • Assist senior staff with preparing technical reports including compiling analytical data and preparing accurate and grammatically correct descriptions of site conditions

  • Gain working knowledge and understanding of engineering geologic and geotechnical engineering concepts and project requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. in engineering, geology, or earth science from an accredited University

  • Detail oriented and organized

  • Pragmatic and thoughtful

  • Easy to communicate and collaborate with, team player

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Able to work in a dynamic and demanding environment

  • Self-motivated

  • Ability to learn from mistakes and develop prudent professional judgment

  • Proficient with word processing, spreadsheets, and other computer applications

  • Working knowledge of graphic illustration programs (such as Adobe Illustrator) and database/GIS programs

  • Comfortable with multitasking and performing varying functions on various projects

  • Ability and willingness for variable schedules, some late night or weekend work.

Conditions

  • This position requires the selected candidate to have an acceptable driving record that is insurable by our insurance carrier and the ability to travel to project sites, as needed. A DMV printout of driving record will be required.

  • The construction-related aspects of geotechnical engineering and engineering geology require the ability to periodically work overtime and in rare occasions travel outside of the local area overnight.

  • The physical demands of this position require the ability to perform fieldwork (including lifting and maneuvering of equipment weighing 75 lbs) in a range of weather conditions.

  • The salaried compensation is based upon experience. The position is also entitled to paid holidays; paid time-off; retirement savings plan match; and health, dental, and vision insurance benefits.
