Position Summary:
The Director of Engineering will manage all aspects of the company’s engineering efforts which includes assisting the company’s manufacturing plants with chronic downtime issues, driving improvements in equipment performance / efficiency (primarily encompassing liquid packaging lines - both hot fill and cold fill. The position will provide plant support by a) enhancing and improving the effectiveness of preventive maintenance (PM) programs, b) coordinating overhauls and rebuilds, service, installation, commissioning, and training, and c) consulting / recommending / justifying improvements and upgrades to high-speed production / packaging equipment.

The Director of Engineering will provide on-site in Winston Salem, NC and remote technical support for our Hazelwood, MO location. This includes troubleshooting of manufacturing plant equipment and identifying opportunities for cost / efficiency improvement through process improvements of capital upgrades. He / she will support all business development activities including the engineering evaluation of new products, product formulas, manufacturing processes, and packaging requirements. He / she will also identify and implement cost reduction, efficiency improvement and safety improvement initiatives.

The Director of Engineering will lead the engineering team and cross-functionally interface and assist, with Operations management, leading the maintenance teams in achieving safety, quality, productivity, and financial targets through planning, designing, managing, and overseeing projects.

Position Responsibilities may include, but not limited to:

  • Serve as a resource both on-site and remotely for plants experiencing downtime events, chronic nuisance issues and/or a lack of onsite technical resources.
  • Build plant relationships in a professional manner through solution-oriented communication.
  • Plan and manage system installations and retrofit activity on liquid packaging lines, both hot fill and cold fill, warehouse optimization and kitchen/blending processing.
  • Assist manufacturing plant maintenance team with various engineering / maintenance tasks.
  • Evaluate effectiveness of PMs and PM program
  • Plan and coordinate equipment overhauls and rebuilds.
  • Develop long term asset care plans and strategies.
  • Work with manufacturing plant electricians/mechanics as well as external contractors to assist with day-to-day equipment troubleshooting including electrical, mechanical and process related issues.
  • Troubleshoot bottling and support equipment including fillers, cappers, depalitzers, labelers, case and shrink packers, palletizers, wrappers, blenders, boilers, and air compressors.
  • Identify when vendor support is needed because of troubleshooting outcomes.
  • Assist with vendor coordination support for plants during critical downtime events.
  • Communicate issues/findings from downtime events with plant leadership and assist in developing long term strategy for correcting issues.
  • Work as part of a multi-discipline team to observe machine/line performance and identify issues and opportunities for improvement.
  • Participate in and lead structured problem-solving exercises such as Breakdown Analysis (BDA) and other root cause analysis i.e., 5 Why, Fishbone, etc.
  • Support automation hardware and software within the plants including Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Human Machine Interface (HMIs), Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), industrial networks and other various electrical systems.
  • Work with plant leadership to ensure line controls are properly set-up for optimal performance.
  • Maintain and update plant Vorne System to ensure it is accurately reporting OEE, Efficiency, Bottle Attainment, etc., data.
  • Support manufacturing plant operations network, including helping plants troubleshoot local issues, collaborating with vendors to support installs/updates and interfacing with IT and IT vendors.
  • Plan and manage Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) for new equipment to ensure that equipment meets company requirements and standards.
  • Manage capital projects and new equipment installations, including scoping projects, analyzing, and documenting Capital Appropriations Requests (CAR) through the final steps of coordinating and supervising vendors and interfacing with plant leadership.
  • Assist with developing long term capital improvement plans for plants.
  • Other projects or duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in associated technical competencies, 6 + years of experience in troubleshooting/investigating mechanical, electrical and process related issues and hands-on technical experience on electro-mechanical systems as applied to state-of-the-art packaging machinery and 3 years of technical personnel management experience.
  • Experience interpreting and creating documents such as technical publications, Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) procedures, safety guidelines, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Beverage packaging industry experience
  • Food industry experience
  • Ability to create and interpret mechanical and electrical diagrams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite inclusive of report creation and data entry
  • Maintain valid passport for international travel to OEM sites for training and FATs.
  • Travel as necessary to support needs of company’s manufacturing plants.
  • Available nights and weekends as necessary from time-to-time to provide technical support to the company as needed on an emergency basis.
  • Strong ability to troubleshoot and repair mechanical and process problems on electro-mechanical systems.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Master’s degree and 10+ years of experience performing plant level electrical mechanical work.
  • 10+ years of experience working as an applications engineer.
  • Familiarity with PLC’s, online access and troubleshooting to the device level.
