Overview:  We are an intermodal business -- transloading, storing, and draying cargo and shipping containers to and from the Ports of Virginia. Our warehouse and storage yard are located a few miles from the Virginia International Gateway port, in Portsmouth VA. We handle all types of cargo, including overweight, breakbulk, out of gauge, and over-dimensional. 

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Crane Rigger to join our team. The Crane Rigger will be responsible for safely setting up and rigging cranes, signaling the crane operator during lifting operations, and ensuring the safety and efficiency of all crane-related activities on the job site. The ideal candidate will have a keen eye for safety, excellent communication skills, and a strong understanding of rigging techniques and equipment.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Inspect and prepare lifting equipment, including slings, shackles, and other rigging gear, to ensure they are in good condition and appropriate for the task.
  • Set up cranes and rigging according to the lift plan and site requirements.
  • Signal or verbally direct crane operators during lifting operations to ensure safe and precise movements.
  • Calculate load weights, center of gravity, and crane capacities to ensure safe lifting operations.
  • Ensure that all rigging work complies with safety standards, regulations, and company policies.
  • Perform routine maintenance and inspections on rigging equipment.
  • Assist in planning and coordinating lifting operations with other team members and site supervisors.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring all rigging equipment is stored properly.
  • Identify potential hazards and take corrective action to mitigate risks.
  • Provide guidance and training to less experienced rigging personnel.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification as a Crane Rigger (NCCER, NCCCO, or equivalent) is preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a crane rigger in construction or industrial environments.
  • Strong knowledge of rigging techniques, equipment, and safety standards.
  • Ability to read and interpret lift plans, blueprints, and load charts.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Physical ability to lift heavy objects and work in various weather conditions.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work in a physically demanding environment, including lifting heavy objects, standing for long periods, and working at heights.
  • Manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination.
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions and environments.

Work Environment:

  • Outdoor construction or industrial sites.
  • Exposure to loud noise, dust, and hazardous materials.
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, gloves, safety glasses, and steel-toed boots is required.

 

Position Requirements:

·     High school diploma or GED, previous yard experience; some college is a plus

·     Supervisory experience required

·     Ability to think, plan and make quick, smart decisions

·     Maintain a proactive, positive approach to the company, the position, and to daily work

·     Understand OSHA compliance requirements and HAZMAT requirements

·     Forklift experience is required; forklift certification is preferred

·     Boom crane experience a plus

·     Active driver license; CDL preferred

·     Must be able to physically stand, sit, move, squat, walk, and climb during the course of the shift

·     Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds or more

·     Occasional night and weekend work will be needed

·     Excellent verbal and written communication skills

·     Able to work in an outside, fast-paced environment with multiple priorities

·     Able to think, plan, and work independently; critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities are a must

·     Must follow all health and safety procedures and regulations as dictated by the organization and the Federal and state authorities

·     Inventory management/job control experience is a plus
