The purpose of this position, under general supervision, is to support the Welding Training Department by cutting and preparing metal for welding coupons and projects. This role involves using various welding shop equipment to ensure efficient operation of the department. Additional tasks and assignments may be required as designated by the Welding Program Coordinator or Welding Instructors. Emphasis on proper PPE, safety, situational awareness, and equipment use is a top priority for this position. The role also includes assisting with day-to-day operations and working on projects to enhance departmental efficiency.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Utilize proper PPE at all times
  • Safely operate multiple pieces of metal cutting and welding shop equipment such as:
    • Bandsaw
    • Iron worker
    • Plasma table and plasma cutter
    • Oxyacetylene torch and track torch
    • Bug-O MM-1 Pipe Beveler
    • Bench or handheld grinder
    • Various other shop equipment and hand tools
    • Utilize tape measures and other precision measuring tools accurately
    • Monitor and track inventories
    • Other duties as assigned

Associated Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

  • Must be able to exercise discernment in safe equipment operations at all times
  • Advanced ability to work independently and communicate clearly
  • Must be able to organize and demonstrate initiative
  • Must be able to do basic math, including fractions for accurate measuring and cutting of metal
  • Must have the aptitude to learn, or knowledge of operating welding shop equipment to include more complex computerized equipment such as the plasma table and the bug-o pipe cutter.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude and strong work ethic
  • Good hand-eye coordination and steady hands
  • Ability to lift heavy materials and work in physically demanding conditions for extended periods
  • Sharp eyesight to ensure precision in measuring and cutting tasks
  • Knowledge of workplace safety standards and procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Ability to recognize potential hazards and take preventive measures

Minimum Requirement (A combination of the following experience and training, or the equivalent of, would be qualifying):

  • High school diploma or equivalent from an academic institution accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency that is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education
  • Basic Computer Skills
  • Basic skills in Microsoft Office and Excel
  • Familiarity with welding shop equipment and tools, such as torches, grinders, bandsaws, and safety gear, etc
  • Ability to read and interpret basic technical drawings and blueprints
  • Proficiency in using measuring tools like calipers, micrometers, and tape measures
