Position Summary:

The Individual in this position is charged with the overall responsibility for the Lower and Upper

Elementary programs at Shining Stars. The coordinator assumes responsibility for creating, sustaining, and nurturing an engaging educational environment true to the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori. The Elementary Coordinator oversees and coaches the guides/teachers, specialists, and assistants in the Elementary program. The Elementary Coordinator works as a guide in the classroom approximately 20%time (or as needed) and directs and coordinates coaching, assessment, in-service training, and administrative duties approximately 80% time.


Essential Functions of the Coordinator -Instructional Coach:

  • Promote reflection, provide instructional/teaching guidance and structure where needed, and focus on strengths, collaboration, and common issues of concern for guides/ teachers
  • Responsible for ensuring high-quality instruction in classrooms through modeling, co-planning,co-teaching, and providing feedback to the elementary teachers, resident fellows, and assistants
  • Responsible for working with teachers to improve the quality of their lessons and the quality of students' education. Serve as mentor and role model, helping teachers stay fresh and use the latest techniques and technologies in their classrooms.
  • Collaborates with the Principal for the overall culture, climate, equity focus, safety, well-being implementation of positive discipline principles, and classroom management in the elementary communities
  •  Knowledge of the academic and social-emotional development of elementary grades 1st through 6th grade
  • Responsible for overall curriculum development of the Montessori Lower and Upper elementary program(s)
  •  Facilitates positive teamwork and a spirit of collaboration among the elementary guides, assistants and
    specialists
  •  Provides ongoing instructional coaching and feedback to guides/teachers, assistants, and other academic
    support staff consistent with the school mission and job descriptions
  •  Collaborates with the Principal to keep elementary guides/teachers, and resident fellows informed of professional growth and development opportunities; guides teachers, resident fellows, and assistants
    regarding appropriate professional development
  •  Leads inventory review and control for every elementary classroom community to ensure that SSMA meets the requirements/standards for a Montessori-accredited elementary learning environment
  •  Assists the Principal with the administration and analysis of all informal and formal assessments and with the trimester progress reporting and review process
  •  Collaborates with the Principal in preparing new and prospective parent education meetings (open
    houses, virtual town halls, etc).
  •  Assists the Principal with screening for new Elementary guides and assistants.
  •  Ensures that the program complies with Montessori accreditation standards and OSSE regulations for the elementary programs.
  •  Coordinates with the Elementary guide to achieve curriculum cohesion and ensure a smooth transition of the lower elementary students to the upper elementary classroom
  •  Assists in maintaining an elementary substitute teacher files and recruits and supports substitutes for the elementary classrooms
  •  Assists with planning after-school enrichment programs for elementary program students  
  • Assists the Principal with annual events such as Back to School Night, Open House, Peace Assemblies, Curriculum Nights, Stepping Up Ceremony, etc. Directs and engages volunteers in support of events.
  •  Assists the Principal in monitoring the quality of the monthly classroom newsletter for parents and incorporating information for the all-school weekly News & Notes.
  • Assists with the implementation of the Montessori Model United Nations (MMUN) program, international studies trips (6th grade only), and ‘going out’/expeditionary programs for elementary students
  •  Assists the Principal and Primary Montessori Coordinator with creating the academic agenda and leads the weekly Elementary Academic team meetings (when needed).

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Qualifications - At least two of the following are required:

  • Master’s degree in Education or related field
  • AMS, IMC, AMI Montessori Certificate for Elementary Education; comprehensive understanding of the Montessori Method for grades 1-6. Preferred but not required
  • 3-5+ years of full-time teaching or instructional coaching experience at the level required for this position (Grades 1-6) in an independent, public or public charter school
  • Passing scores on Praxis \ core and subject exams

 

Other qualifications (preferred):

All candidates must be committed to meeting the needs of all learners and have experience working in

urban communities.

  • 2+ years of experience as a school administrator, such as a school Coordinator, Program Coordinator, or vice/assistant principal
  • Demonstrated leadership skills; ability to guide, inspire, coach, and mentor teachers.
  •  Supervisory skills: effectively managing a team to fulfill common goals and working individually with teachers to meet defined objectives.
  •  Ability to establish and maintain cooperative, positive, and effective working relationships with others.
  •  Ability to complete work and meet deadlines in the face of interruptions.
  • Excellent oral and written skills, including public speaking.
