The Energetics Technology Center, Inc., in partnership with the University of St. Thomas and the Army Research Laboratory, is seeking entry-level and mid-level engineers/scientists to support a multi-year effort aimed at accelerating technology development in renewable energy technologies. ETC is partnering with SYNCRIS to explore technologies to help the Army improve energy resilience and tactical self-sufficiency. This is an ETC position located at SYNCRIS in Bloomington, Minnesota.
We are seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to work on a project that leverages model predictive controls to build autonomous grid-forming capabilities for direct application into existing modular inverters. The successful candidate will have a solid understanding of control theory, system modeling, and optimization algorithms, and will be responsible for developing discrete control algorithms for grid-forming using model predictive control (MPC) methods.
SYNCRIS began with the vision of making clean and reliable energy accessible to the billions of people worldwide that don’t have access to electricity. This idea culminated in decades of research and development to create technology that is easy to design, build, deploy and upgrade. At the core of our technology is a modular strategy like the one that enabled personal computers to replace centralized computers. We aim for simplicity, standardized building blocks, and scalability. Our team is passionate about leveraging these capabilities to make access to clean and reliable energy available to all.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop MPC algorithms and systems using MATLAB, Simulink, and other tools.
- Conduct literature review and research on the latest developments and trends in MPC and related fields.
- Formulate the mathematical model of the system to be controlled.
- Design the cost function and constraints for the MPC algorithm.
- Develop discrete control algorithms for grid-forming using MPC methods.
- Test and validate the performance, robustness, and reliability of the MPC algorithms and systems using simulations and experiments.
- Carry out preliminary testing of the enhanced functionality of supplying loads under transient events and external command signals while dealing with load variability, grid-control actions, and providing grid-support services.
- Implement and deploy the MPC algorithms and systems on hardware platforms such as microcontrollers, FPGA's, and embedded systems.
- Implement the MPC algorithm in software.
- Tune the MPC algorithm to achieve the desired performance.
- Validate the MPC algorithm through simulation and experimental testing.
- Collaborate with our inverter partner to apply the MPC system to a three-phase inverter setup.
- Provide MPC algorithm to the partner and assist in coordinating control signals.
- Compare results with metrics from software models.
- Document and present the MPC algorithms and systems to internal and external stakeholders.
- Provide technical guidance to other engineers and clients on MPC-related issues.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or higher in electrical engineering, control engineering, or related fields.
- 3-5 years of experience with discrete control of power electronics (e.g. classical discrete control that could be extended to MPC), and with DSP, microcontrollers, FPGAs, and embedded systems programming experience.
- 3-7 years of experience in power electronics (experience preferably related to inverters).
- Solid understanding of control theory, system modeling, and optimization algorithms.
- Experience with software tools such as Simulink, MATLAB (which has a Model Predictive Control Toolbox), and Python programming.
- Experience with real-time hardware platforms for use in deploying MPC controllers.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and teamwork skills.
