Empowering Youth and Families Outreach (EYFO) is a 501c3 organization providing year-round academic, enrichment, and leadership programming to 5-12 low-income youth in South Seattle and South King County since 2001. EYFO’s mission is to make a lifelong impact in the lives of underprivileged youth by offering programs to create resilient leaders who are empowered to achieve their dreams. Our goal is to eliminate the barriers that keep youth of color from realizing their full potential by ensuring that every child is equipped with a high level of support in the identification and pursuit of their aspirations. 

Job Summary

  • Empowering Youth & Families Outreach is recruiting enthusiastic people to help us deliver fun, safe, creative and character-building programs for children ages 5-12.
  • Our Lead School-Age Child Care Counselors will provide welcoming environments for children to learn, play, and grow.
  • This position is for our before and after school programs and our summer day camp.
  • You will educate, care for, and inspire the young minds of our youth using a variety of teaching methods.
  • To be successful at EYFO, you should have patience, compassion, and energy as young children; have different needs, abilities, aptitudes, and emotions.
  • The best candidates will also have excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.

 

Lead School-Age Child Care Counselor Responsibilities*

  • Develop and lead programs and activities; instill character traits, lead group discussions, arts and crafts, organized games, cultural activities, drama, music, story hour, sports, field trips, and other special projects and events.
  • Facilitate the transition of children from one activity to the next.
  • Maintain appropriate ratio and head count.
  • Work with other staff to ensure the care and safety of participants at all times
  • Periodically, in the absence of the Director you may need to be in charge of the program and/or open or close the program.
  • Communicate effectively with the parents of our youth.
  • Assist with set-up and takedown of activities, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director.
  • Encourage social interactions between children and help them improve their self-esteem.
  • Be an active team player in the EYFO summer program and participate in all activities.   
  • Provide a safe environment for all participants, supervise, and direct students. 
  •  Assist in enforcing discipline that is fair and respectful to the child. 
  •  Be a positive force in the student’s life. 
  •  Seek ways to build active relationships with the students and their families. 
  •  Encourage students and compliment their successes. 
  •  Participate in training based on the Best Starts for Kids YPQI (Youth   Program Quality Initiative) model
  •  Supervision, field trips, games, songs, and enrichment activities. 
  •  Understand student learning styles to better accommodate and serve the students that we are
  • engaged with. 

     Come prepared, plan lesson plans, and submit in advance for all activities      involving EYFO

  • Monitor free time on the playground.
  • Ensure the classroom is clean, safe, and organized.
  • Participate in professional training and/or coursework as needed and required.

Lead School-Age Child Care Counselor Requirements

  • Education: AA degree with a focus on early childhood development.
  • Experience: 2 or more years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience in a classroom setting and large groups on field trips or recreational setting.
  • Register in MERIT for Stars Identification
  • At least 20 credits of Early Childhood Education courses.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Good mediation and nurturing abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Current Red Cross CPR/First Aid certifications, bloodborne pathogens and have a Tuberculosis test clearance within the past year. 
  • Current King County Food Handlers Permit.
  • To be hired must pass criminal background check.
  • To be hired must provide proof of eligibility to work in the U.S. and valid government issued ID.
  • Current Washington state driver’s license and a clear driving history record from Department of Licensing (DOL) upon hire.
