The Medical Assistant is part of our Patient Care Team, in a single-provider gynecologic practice with this stated Mission: Our office offers women a health care experience based on nurturing, trust, and empowerment. Our goal is to promote not just good gynecologic health but full health in body, mind, and spirit. Our aim is to include our patient as an active participant in her/their own wellness. Together we can form a unique health plan for each patient.

The Assistant strives to achieve that Mission and in doing so takes primary responsibility for welcoming patients, efficiently preparing patients for the provider, assisting provider during examinations and medical procedures, drawing and/or preparing all lab specimens and cleaning/preparing examination room for patients. The MA’s commitment and ability independently to make the appointment, its follow-through, and its follow-up go smoothly and as quickly as the provider allows, as well as to take initiative to make improvements, are paramount to success.

Qualifications:

The Medical Assistant must demonstrate:

  • Great attention to detail
  • Empathetic communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to deal effectively and quickly with changing situations
  • Ability to work with interruptions; to be able to deal with patients and co-workers in a professional, courteous, and cooperative manner.

Education/Experience: Graduate of a recognized and accredited Medical Assistant program required. Certification in Medical Assisting (CMA) and at least one year’s experience in medical group practice strongly preferred, although candidates with less than a year of experience as well as top recent grads also will be considered. CPR certification and venipuncture experience necessary.

Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, the Assistant must be able to learn, know and understand the athena EMR system and be able to efficiently type using a keyboard.

Physical Demands: Requires standing and/or walking for extended periods of time, as well as stooping, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 25 pounds required.

A PT MA should be able to work flexible hours in the event that the FT MA is on PTO, ill, or otherwise out of the office during patient appointment hours.

At a minimum, the Medical Assistant’s duties and responsibilities include all the following, which are at the heart of daily success in delivering outstanding care to each patient. The MA may also anticipate and volunteer for or be assigned other duties as they are recognized or become necessary.

  • Ensure the exam room is properly and fully cleaned, stocked, and prepared for each appointment based on that appointment type.
  • Record weight, height, and vital signs in EHR.
  • Efficiently and correctly update EHR with patient’s medical history, medications & reason for visit, enabling the provider to stay on schedule
  • Chaperone provider during patient examination.
  • Phlebotomy
  • Assist collection of Pap smear and other in-office screenings/procedures.
  • Perform in-house pregnancy tests and urinalysis.
  • Administer and document injections for vaccines, birth control and other medications ordered by the provider.
  • Place orders in EHR to cross over to LabCorp for in-house labs and specimens.
  • Decontaminate and sterilize equipment and instruments.
  • Maintain records and logs as required and document all patient contacts in EHR.
  • Promptly answer and return phone calls and portal messages, handling clinical concerns per physician’s orders and documenting all patient interaction.
  • Participate as part of the care team for a given provider and facilitate huddle meetings to plan for patient arrivals.
  • Assist in the patient’s coordination of care, ensuring that ordered tests are received, documented, and reported to patient if results are not sent via patient portal.
  • Order medical/related supplies

Periodically, the MA must:

  • Complete and apply HIPAA and OSHA training as directed (examples include but are not limited to: email correspondence with or about patients outside the Unified system is always encrypted; both electronic and paper charts are locked electronically or physically from others’ access; printed patient paperwork is destroyed immediately after use.)
  • Attend and participate in practice meetings and clinical quality meetings.
  • Participate in all clinical quality initiatives.
