Our Animal Caretakers are responsible for the day-to-day care of patients and boarders. Responsibilities includes feeding, watering, cleaning, walking, bathing, and monitoring the well-being of dogs, cats and, occasionally, other companion animals. Candidates must possess the willingness to learn and the desire to provide gentle, compassionate care for boarded and hospitalized pets. Kennel experience is not always a prerequisite for this position.

General Knowledge

  • Know the range of services the practice provides and the species it treats.
  • Be reasonably familiar with breeds and coat colors.
  • Follow OSHA standards. Be able to find Material Safety Data Sheets quickly.

Job Requirements

  • Reliable
  • Professional appearance and attitude.
  • Respectful towards, clients, team members, and animals (alive or deceased) at all times.
  • Maintain a list of tasks and engage in productive work during slow periods.
  • Team Player
  • Maintain constant vigilance regarding open doorways that could allow pets to escape from the facility.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding clients and patients for whom the practice provides veterinary services.
  • Assist with pet or facility emergencies that may arise including dog or cat fights, choking or strangulating animals, and facility fire or weather-related emergencies.
  • Follow established facility procedures to ensure the security of patients, boarders, and the building.

Education/Background

  • Must be 17 years or older to apply.
  • Previous work experience preferred.

Working Conditions

  • Physical strength and ability to frequently stand for shifts as required.
  • Be able to lift, push and pull, pets and objects weighing up to at least 50 pounds without assistance, handle repetitive up-and-down or back-and-forth motions, and work while bending.
  • Routinely exposed to animal bites, scratches, and on occasion, exposed to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards and medication/controlled substances.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Must have physical mobility and dexterity to frequently stand, walk bend, push, twist, kneel, climb, squat, stoop, and reach over-head.
  • Moderately high noise level work environment
  • Must wear closed-toe shoes, gloves, and other protective equipment as required.
  • Must pass company required drug screen.
