Position Summary

The Microbiology Technician will be responsible for supporting laboratory operations focused on the cultivation, maintenance, and research of mushroom cultures. This role involves preparing media, sterilizing equipment, inoculating cultures, and monitoring growth under controlled conditions. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in microbiology with specific experience in mycology or related fields,

Performs duties with supervision from the Operations Manager or Quality Manager, operate from specific and definite directions and instructions. Decisions are of a routine nature made within the prescribed operating guidelines, policies and procedures.

Essential Functions / Major Responsibilities

  • Execute production and clean room tasks including preparation and sterilization of media, inoculation with pure cultures, and post-processing of materials.
  • Monitor and document the growth and development of mushroom cultures, ensuring optimal conditions are maintained.
  • Perform routine laboratory tasks such as cleaning, autoclaving, and organizing laboratory supplies.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for mushroom cultivation.
  • Conduct microbiological assays to ensure the purity and quality of mushroom cultures.
  • Record and analyze data accurately, maintaining detailed notes and electronic records.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and problem-solving related to culture contamination and suboptimal growth.
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment by following company’s operating procedures.

 

Secondary Functions / Minor Responsibilities

  • Assist in the routine tasks including bagging substrate, inoculating, irrigating, and harvesting of mushroom bags.
  • Assist in monitoring and sanitation activities of the grow facility to ensure environmental contamination is kept to a minimum.
  • Cooperation as a team member, able to work independently after receiving daily instruction.
  • Keep work area clean and free of filth or foreign debris.

Education &/or Experience

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Mycology, Biology, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of laboratory experience, preferably in a microbiology or mycology setting.
  • Knowledge of sterile techniques and microbiological methods.
  • Experience with mushroom cultivation is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in laboratory equipment and software for data collection and analysis.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment

Other Desirable Traits & Skills

  • Applied knowledge of aseptic technique and sterilization
  • Prior experience in biological production and/or the gourmet mushroom industry
  • Interest in mushroom cultivation and applications
