This is a 12-month full-time tenure-track regular faculty position, with primary responsibilities in the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) accredited Master of Athletic Training (MAT) Program. The faculty member in this position provides leadership for and manages all aspects of the MAT clinical education program. This includes designing a clinical education program that meets the mission and vision of the MAT program while meeting all CAATE accreditation standards. Teaching responsibilities include full-time graduate athletic training courses, which generally constitute 60% of faculty workload or 24 credits/year taught across a 12-month teaching cycle. However, teaching release time is granted for this position to accommodate for the administrative work associated with it. Release time is dependent upon student enrollment and may be adjusted at the discretion of the Program Director, Dean, and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

The faculty member must maintain professional effectiveness, which includes but is not limited to high quality of scholarship, intellectual integrity, professional currency, cooperation of all phases of the academic program, openness to learn about and adopt improved methods of teaching, and above all, a vital interest in student learning. He/she/they must also work in a professional and team-oriented manner with faculty, staff, and administrators.

Essential job functions: These consist of four domains: Administration, Teaching, Scholarship, and Service.

Administration (25%)

  • Identify and solicit new clinical education opportunities that align with the evolving role of athletic trainers within the health care system and meet the requirements of the program.
  • Create simulation experiences to supplement live patient encounters.
  • Ensure that the clinical education program exceeds the CAATE Accreditation Standards.
  • Collaborate with the Program Director, other program faculty, the Director of Assessment and Accreditation of Health Sciences and Pharmacy (DAA-HSP), and Executive Associate Dean of Health Sciences and Pharmacy (EAD-HSP) to develop accreditation annual report and self-study documentation.
  • Collaborate with the Medical Director to ensure that the clinical experience program meets current practice standards.
  • Collaborate with HSP’s Office of Experiential Education (OEE) Director on the development and maintenance of regulatory requirements including but not limited to developing, renewing, and adhering to affiliation agreements.
  • Collaborate with OEE’s Clinical Education Specialist to maintain complete and accurate program, site, and student-related records/documentation to support program, college, and University accreditation and all regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with the Program Director to develop and administer a budget that supports the needs of the MAT clinical education program.
  • Develop and update policies and procedures that govern the implementation of the MAT clinical education program including but not limited to health and safety requirements.
  • Oversee the assignment of clinical education opportunities (including athletic training and supplemental clinical experiences) for all students within the MAT program.
  • In collaboration with the Associate Dean of Health Sciences and Pharmacy, Program Director, and Registrar, manage clinical progression of MAT students using preceptor feedback to evaluate students’ integration of athletic training knowledge, skills, and abilities ensuring program outcomes are met.
  • In cooperation with OEE personnel develop, implement, and assess orientation, training, and development programs on clinical education for MAT students and preceptors.

Teaching (45% - 18 credits/year, which may be adjusted depending upon student enrollment)

  • Provide quality instruction in athletic training, both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Fulfill the fundamental responsibilities of a faculty member, including meeting assigned classes regularly, beginning and ending class sessions as scheduled, developing course syllabi and teaching plans, maintaining office hours, and assessing student learning.
  • Continuously strive to incorporate and introduce timely topics and cutting-edge concepts in relevant areas.
  • As assigned, serve as course coordinator and academic advisor.
  • Be an exemplary professional role model for students.
  • Participate in the development, assessment, and revision of the didactic and clinical curricula, including development of new courses and teaching and evaluation methods needed for effective delivery of the curriculum. This may include creating, developing, and evaluating innovative teaching methods which prepare students for modern athletic training practice.
  • Assess student learning in all classes and implement changes to demonstrate continuous improvement.
  • Meet assigned classes, beginning and ending class sessions as scheduled.
  • Maintain compliance with the academic calendar, and with policies and procedures in the Faculty Manual.

Scholarship (20%)

  • Develop a robust scholarly agenda to maintain contemporary expertise in the field.
  • Pursue fundable programs appropriate to the faculty member’s discipline and interests.
  • Disseminate the results of scholarly endeavors in appropriate forums, including publications, presentations, and teaching.
  • As appropriate, mentor and collaborate with other scholars and students both inside and outside the institution.

Service (20%)

  • Support athletic training students’ personal and professional development.
  • Participating in faculty governance, including productive service on Health Sciences and Pharmacy (HSP) and University committees and regular and prepared attendance at department and faculty meetings.
  • If applicable, serve as a faculty advisor to student organizations.
  • Serve as an academic advisor as assigned by the department chair.
  • As appropriate, serve as mentor to new faculty and staff.
  • Contribute meaningfully to departmental and HSP developmental and planning activities such as retreats and workshops.
  • Assist with student recruitment.
  • Maintain a contemporary understanding of CAATE accreditation standards and work to ensure compliance with those standards.
  • Assist the program director with programmatic assessment and accreditation reports.
  • Participate in local, state, and/or national professional organizations and professional development activities.
  • Participate in community service activities as appropriate for the faculty’s area of practice, or as determined by the program director.

Secondary job functions:

  • In collaboration with the Program Director, OEE Director, and DAA-HSP, develop, implement, and assess the quality of MAT clinical education experiences including but not limited to evaluation of preceptors clinical teaching abilities, diversity of clinical experiences, and safety of clinical sites.
  • Direct, supervise and/or collaborate with professional staff that support the clinical education program.
  • In collaboration with the Program Director and DAA-HSP, develop and implement an assessment plan for the clinical education program including programmatic and outcomes assessment.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications—Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Credentials that support appointments at the rank of assistant professor. Rank commensurate with experience and credentials.
  • Earned master’s in athletic training or a related discipline (e.g., Rehabilitation, Higher Education, Physical Therapy), doctoral degree strongly preferred.
  • A commitment to fostering an environment of diversity and inclusion among students, faculty, and staff.
  • Preferential consideration may be given to candidates with prior college teaching experience in a CAATE-accredited athletic training program.
  • Preferential consideration may be given to candidates with dual credentials, e.g., ATC, PT
  • Current BOC certification and Indiana athletic training licensure required.
  • Knowledge and experience sufficient to enable the candidate to teach supervise graduate athletic training experiential opportunities.
  • Ability to deliver course content and to assist students in understanding course content.
  • Ability to evaluate student writing and to provide effective feedback.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with students, faculty, staff, and administrators.
  • Ability to adapt to changing teaching and learning environments and content-delivery methods.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with faculty colleagues, in the best interests of the students.
