Summary
The National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners in seeking and experienced Managing Editor who will oversee the functions of the LAS COMLEX-USA Level 3 exam editing team. These functions include: the editorial process for medical editing for the exam series, editing of test items and exams at various levels of development in regard to style, format, clarity, and identification of potential medical-content issues; team member training, supervision, and project assignments; training subject matter experts in item writing and revision and regular check-ins and performance evaluations (formal and informal) of team members and editing team work distribution

Responsibilities:

  • Provide day-to-day direction and supervision for all Level 3 editors and departmental assistant editors. Assign editorial staff to projects based on skills, strengths, and availability. Plan for the needs and projects of the team to ensure that deadlines are met. Develop process improvements (e.g., project management tools). Screen items for language that may be perceived as discriminatory or offensive

  • Oversee a process in which quality checks are conducted on items edited by all team members, providing feedback and guidance as needed to increase quality and accuracy of team item editing performance. Work closely with newer editors (generally Editor I and Assistant Editor team members) to increase their exposure to and comfort with item editing, with an emphasis on medical editing and NBOME item style elements.

  • Work with other editors and staff to ensure accurate and consistent use of terminology and formatting in items. Support editors in preparation and follow-up tasks related to item-writing workshops

  • Oversee training of subject matter experts (SMEs) in the art of item writing, facilitated by the editing team. Train new editors to act as meeting liaisons and room facilitators.

  • Provide leadership to the team as they develop online courses and webinars for SME training.

  • Develop process improvements (e.g., virtual item-writing workshops, innovative workshop approaches). Learn to facilitate workshops and review meetings independently

  • Participate in item-writing workshops and other external meetings as necessary depending on editing team needs. In this role, and when team needs dictate, perform all editing functions for workshops and item editing. This includes researching, fact-checking, screening for any language that may be perceived as discriminatory or offensive, and cultivating ongoing communication with item authors.

  • Support editing administrative functions as needed, including scheduling, emailing, and research

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • Experience with medical terminology and editing is required for this position

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working with proofing, fact-checking, and/or copy/manuscript editing

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in a supervisory capacity

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite

  • Superior attention to detail with proficient data entry and proofreading skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to balance multiple projects simultaneously and quickly adjust to shifting priorities

  • Flexibility and positive, team-oriented attitude
