Job Summary: The Sterile Processing Technician at the Veterans Administration Medical Center plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and efficacy of medical equipment and instruments used in patient care. This position involves meticulously cleaning, sterilizing, assembling, and distributing medical instruments and equipment according to established protocols and standards. The technician works closely with healthcare professionals to support surgical procedures, outpatient treatments, and emergency care.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Certification as a Sterile Processing Technician (e.g., CRCST, CBSPD) preferred.
  • 1-2 years of SPT experience required 
  • Knowledge of sterilization techniques, infection control practices, and medical terminology.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Sterilization and Disinfection: Operate and monitor sterilization equipment to ensure proper functioning and adherence to sterilization guidelines. Disinfect and decontaminate instruments and equipment using appropriate techniques.

  2. Instrument Assembly: Assemble surgical instrument trays and other medical equipment in accordance with standardized procedures and protocols.

  3. Inventory Management: Maintain inventory of sterile supplies and instruments. Monitor expiration dates and ensure proper storage conditions.

  4. Quality Control: Perform quality checks on sterilized instruments and equipment to verify effectiveness and compliance with regulatory requirements.

  5. Documentation and Record-keeping: Maintain accurate records of sterilization processes, equipment maintenance, and inventory levels. Document any deviations from standard procedures.

  6. Collaboration: Work collaboratively with surgical teams, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to anticipate instrument needs and support efficient patient care.

  7. Safety and Compliance: Adhere to infection control policies and procedures to maintain a safe and sterile environment. Follow all safety guidelines and regulations related to handling hazardous materials.

  8. Continuous Improvement: Participate in training programs and continuing education to stay updated on new sterilization techniques, equipment, and regulatory requirements.
