Senior Mechanical Designer - Body in White Tooling Specialist

Required Skills:

  • Mechanical Designer I specializing in Body Shop Tooling for Body in White Assembly with approximately 10 years of experience.
  • Proficient in NX CAD with knowledge of North American Auto Manufacturer standards and specifications for Body in White Tooling Fixtures.
  • Strong understanding of Body Assembly, including geometry setting and Fixture Tools for Framing lines, Bodyside Systems, and Sub Assembly for tooling fixture design.
  • In-depth knowledge of auto assembly strategies, including part flow within an assembly plant or body shop.
  • Comprehensive understanding of GEO and Repot Systems functionality.
  • Skilled in developing detailed design drawings and specifications for mechanical equipment, Fixtures, tools, and controls using computer-assisted drafting (CAD) equipment.
  • Ability to review and analyze specifications, sketches, drawings, ideas, and related data to assess factors affecting component designs and the procedures and instructions to be followed.
  • Expertise in modifying existing 3D and 2D models for “Kits” and creating new designs for simple, intermediate, and complex systems, including developing Kit Sheets showing before and after.
  • Proficiency in modifying and revising designs to correct operating deficiencies or reduce production problems.
  • Capable of driving and understanding customer specifications, both corporate and plant, and applying Comau standards for use in all aspects of mechanical designs.
  • Strong methodology in Fixture and Detail stack up and its relation to machining and tool stack up.
  • Familiarity with customer specifications (corporate and plant), standards, and local and national requirements.
  • Knowledgeable in NAAMS Standards, customer standards, attributes in CAD files, and using CAD Check options.
  • Coordinate and review with Technical Leaders, Project Engineers, Sr. Mechanical Engineers, and colleagues to maintain consistency within a project and resolve design or other problems.
  • Proficient with Windows and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.) and a high degree of competence with CAD platforms and associated application software.
  • Experience in Vendor Coordination and purchasing components, including working in model space and paper space to bring in and identify supplier items such as Weld Guns, End of Arm Tooling, switches, etc.

Preferred Skills:

  • Understanding of Mechanical Design Sequences and Controls documents to Controls Design along with customer deliverables.
  • Ability to describe the operation and maintenance of mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in the production of technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
  • Proficient in analyzing data or information, identifying, and understanding information provided by the customer, supplier, or processes of direction given, and possibly breaking it down for clearer understanding.
  • Skilled in troubleshooting mechanical errors and determining appropriate actions.
  • May be required to travel to other facilities and customer sites to assist in installation/start-up and final machine acceptance.

Additional Requirements:

  • 5+ years of Mechanical Design and Engineering experience in Powertrain or an Associate Degree in Mechanical Technology or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to work independently and within teams.
  • Willingness to travel domestically (5-20%) and internationally as project needs may require for technical support.
