Job DescriptionJob Description

The Plumbing Estimator will be responsible for preparing accurate cost estimates for a wide range of plumbing projects. This role involves analyzing project plans, specifications, and other documents to determine the scope and requirements of each project. The Estimator will collaborate with project managers, suppliers, and subcontractors to ensure that estimates are comprehensive and competitive. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of plumbing systems, materials, and industry practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Cost Estimation:

    • Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates for plumbing projects, including materials, labor, equipment, and subcontractor costs.
    • Analyze project plans, specifications, and addenda to determine project requirements and scope.
    • Utilize estimating software and tools to create comprehensive and reliable estimates.

  2. Bid Preparation:

    • Prepare and submit competitive bid proposals for various plumbing projects.
    • Review and interpret bid documents to ensure all aspects of the project are considered in the estimate.
    • Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits to gather information and clarify project requirements.

  3. Quantity Takeoffs:

    • Perform accurate quantity takeoffs from project drawings and specifications.
    • Identify and quantify all materials and labor required for the plumbing scope of work.
    • Ensure that takeoffs are detailed and comprehensive, covering all project components.

  4. Market Research and Pricing:

    • Conduct market research to stay updated on material costs, labor rates, and industry trends.
    • Obtain and evaluate pricing from suppliers and subcontractors to ensure accurate and competitive estimates.
    • Develop and maintain relationships with suppliers and subcontractors to secure favorable pricing and terms.

  5. Client and Stakeholder Collaboration:

    • Work closely with clients, project managers, and other stakeholders to understand project requirements and expectations.
    • Provide cost-saving recommendations and value engineering options to meet client budgets without compromising quality.
    • Present and explain estimates to clients, addressing any questions or concerns.

  6. Documentation and Reporting:

    • Maintain accurate and organized project documentation, including assumptions, methodologies, and pricing data.
    • Prepare detailed cost analysis reports and summaries for internal review and client presentation.
    • Track and document changes in project scope that impact cost estimates.

  7. Risk Analysis and Mitigation:

    • Identify potential risks and uncertainties in the estimation process and develop mitigation strategies.
    • Evaluate the impact of project changes on cost estimates and recommend adjustments as necessary.
    • Collaborate with project teams to identify and address any cost-related risks or issues.

  8. Budget Development and Cost Management:

    • Assist in the development of project budgets and financial forecasts.
    • Monitor project costs and provide input on cost control measures.
    • Identify opportunities for cost savings and efficiency improvements.

  9. Continuous Improvement:

    • Implement best practices and continuous improvement initiatives in the estimating process.
    • Stay informed about advancements in plumbing technology, systems, and materials.
    • Provide training and support to team members on estimating practices and tools.

  10. Project Closeout:

    • Support the project closeout process by providing final cost estimates and ensuring that all costs are documented.
    • Prepare final project cost reports and assist in the preparation of project closeout documentation.
    • Conduct post-project analysis to identify areas for improvement in future estimates.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field; relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in estimating for plumbing projects.
  • Proficiency in estimating software and tools, such as QuickBooks, ProEst, or similar platforms.
  • Strong knowledge of plumbing systems, materials, and installation techniques.
  • Excellent analytical and mathematical skills, with a keen eye for detail.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate complex information to clients and stakeholders.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Familiarity with local plumbing codes, safety regulations, and industry standards.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Certification as a Certified Plumbing Estimator (CPE) or equivalent is preferred.
