Inalab Consulting has a contingent opening (based on contract award) for a Senior Scientist to support the Life Sciences Research Center to manage the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA).

The Life Sciences Research Center’s (LSRC) primary mission is to support the Air Force basic research program though faculty and cadet research efforts. The purpose of this task order is to provide laboratory technical assistance in the Department of Biology, Life Sciences Research Center (LSRC). The desired result will be a well-maintained and fully operating research BSL-1 and BSL-2 laboratory areas within the US Air Force Academy (USAFA) suitable for the conduct of research programs by cadets, faculty and professional staff of USAFA.

Requirements:

The contractor shall provide laboratory technical support in laboratory-based tasks, which include sampling, testing, measuring, and recording results in biological sciences. The contractor shall provide technical oversight of the labs to include ordering of standard reagents and materials as well as all the required technical support to enable the BSL-1 and BSL-2 laboratories to function effectively. Additionally, the contractor shall adhere to correct procedures and health and safety guidelines (AFI-90-821, May 2019, and DFB OI 91-1, Chemical Hygiene Plan, May 2018) as well as all applicable BSL-1 and BSL-2 SOPs. The primary function is to perform the specific technical support that allows scientists to perform the more complex analytical processes of the laboratory. Contractor support will include:

Preparing and maintaining logs, lab equipment, reagents, solutions and other experimental apparatus and maintaining general laboratory readiness. Instruments may include but not limited to microplate readers, gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (GC-FID) with total organic carbon analysis, fluorescence activated cell sorting (FACS) instrumentation, medium pressure liquid chromatography (MPLC), incubator , real time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) instrumentation systems, gel electrophoresis equipment, flow cytometer, bioreactors, environmental growth chambers, clean benches, autoclaves, incubators, temperature loggers, ovens, light microscopes, fuel cells, UV cross-linker, Nucleic acid quantification and sequencing equipment, and photosynthesis measurement system.

This historically encompasses, on average, 25% of the workload per year when required.

  • Assist research scientists and mentor cadet investigators with BSL-1 and BSL-2 operations, providing administrative support necessary to produce lab protocols, equipment use in experiments, data recording/collection and scientific records. Assist in recording quantity and quality of characteristics or materials of a sample, identify erroneous outcomes and reporting them immediately if they occur, and ensuring all sampling methodologies or lab processes are well controlled and documented.
  • This historically encompasses, on average, 50% of the workload per year when required.
  • Ensure the laboratory is well-stocked and inventoried; this includes identifying supplies/equipment needed for purchase, recommending supply and equipment sources/vendors, collecting supply and equipment needs weekly from laboratory personnel and compiling into a report for the government personnel authorized to submit or approve purchases. Compiles and verifies accuracy of orders. Tracks order fulfillment and maintains organized records. Updates and maintains electronic lab inventory of reagents and samples.
  • This historically encompasses, on average, 12.5% of the workload per year when required.
  • Prepare standard media, reagents and solutions for the lab personnel to use or combine with samples by following pre-established lab protocols, procedures or standardized formulas in compliance with standard protocols and regulations (per section 2.1.1).

Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Biology or Chemistry AND at least ten (10) years of lab experience AND specialized training and/or experience related to BSL-2 lab operations
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Software.
  • Strong interpersonal and team building/working skills; think and operate independently.
  • Proficiency in cell and molecular biology, microbiology, genetics, or medical laboratory techniques
  • Ability to keep detailed and accurate records of equipment and sample data.
  • The proposed candidate must also be a US citizen for ITAR considerations.
  • Previous experience working in a scientific research laboratory is required.
