Job Title: Assistant Principal

Reports to: Director of Educational Services

Reporting to This Position: Teachers, TA's, One to One's



Grove Street Academy (GSA) is a school located on the Children's Home of Kingston campus in Kingston, NY. This school provides necessary educational services to both day treatment and residential students, ages eight to twenty-one, grades 4th through 12th. GSA is an 853 NYSED certified school, specializing in small departmental and self-contained classes, and provides students and their families with a system of interventions and supports that are not available within the public education sectors.


The School Assistant Principal assists the building principal in organizing and fostering a positive, safe environment that is conducive to best meeting the needs of all students, staff and parents. This includes such responsibilities as: leading, directing, counseling, and supervising a variety of personnel and programs; creating effective parent, teacher, and child communications; supporting, encouraging, mentoring, and evaluating staff; fostering teamwork between teachers and among staff and parents; and managing budget items. The assistant principal acts in the capacity of the principal during the principal's absence from the school.


Position Responsibilities:


In a manner consistent with CHK's Mission Statement and applicable laws and regulations, an employee in this position shall:


  • Assist faculty in developing expertise in instructional practices
  • Serve as member of the Building Instructional Leadership Team with the Principal
  • Evaluate staff in accordance with The Children's Home of Kingston's procedures
  • Provide student discipline as needed and follow through discipline referrals with teachers, parents and students
  • Chair the CSE sub-committee and 504 building level meetings
  • Provide technology support, staff development, and information as needed in conjunction with the Coordinator for Instructional Technology
  • Coordinate new student enrollment with the office staff and teachers
  • Meet with the principal and perform responsibilities assigned from meetings
  • Understand and use data in the decision making process at the building level; i.e. Review and interpret SWIS and NWEA data
  • Work with teachers and support staff to keep accurate attendance
  • Complete building master schedules as well as testing and special event schedules
  • Contact parents on an ongoing basis to foster positive relationships between home and school
  • Participate in recruitment and selection committees as needed
  • Supervise, evaluate and provide assistance to staff members
  • Facilitate meetings between various groups effectively
  • May be required to train groups of people
  • Other responsibilities as directed by the Director of Educational Services
  • Perform other related duties as required.


Essential Skills and Experience:


  • Ability to speak, read, and writes English fluently, which allows full communication with agency staff and 3rd
  • Ability to perform highly exacting work, complex in nature, and to exercise sound judgment. Ability to evaluate facts, interprets results, and makes recommendations.
  • Working knowledge of computer accounting system, spreadsheet, and word processing software (Excel and Word).
  • Possess a valid driver license with a driving record acceptable to CHK's insurance carrier and possess the ability to drive agency vehicles to other agency sites and places for training purposes.
  • Ability to use sound judgment while following agency policies, practices and procedures.

Education, Training and Experience:

  • Master's degree in Education, School Leadership or Education Administration/Management
  • 5-10 years' experience (teaching, counseling, leadership) at the high school level, with a history of improving student outcomes
  • School leadership training and/or experience that is consistent with the core concepts of CHK
  • New York State Certification as a School Administrator or Supervisor, School District Administrator or School District Leader or School Building Leader.
  • Elementary and/or Secondary level teaching and administrative experience preferred.

While performing the duties associated with this position, an employee will be called upon to operate office equipment including but not limited to: laptop and desktop PCs; printers; copiers; electronic calculators; shredders; fax machines; telephones.


Employees will regularly be required to stand; walk; sit; use hands (or hands and arms) to carry, finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop; crouch and kneel. Employees will also be regularly required to hear (with or without hearing devices), see (with or without corrective lenses) and speak.


While performing the duties associated with this position, an employee will be in an office setting; in a van or other vehicle; or, in the community at large (attending seminars, conducting training sessions).
