Key Duties and Responsibilities

The key duties and responsibilities of Coding Manager include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead and supervise a team of medical coders, providing guidance and support.
  • Maintain team performance in accordance with standard charge lag metrics of 3 days or less.
  • Review and assign appropriate medical codes to diagnoses, procedures, and services in accordance with coding guidelines and regulations.
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of coded information for billing and reimbursement purposes.
  • Develop and implement coding policies, procedures, and best practices to optimize efficiency and compliance.
  • Conduct regular audits to assess coding accuracy and identify areas for improvement.
  • Collaborate with other departments, including revenue cycle management and healthcare providers, to resolve coding-related issues.
  • Stay current with coding updates, regulations, and industry trends to ensure compliance and enhance coding practices.
  • Provide training and education to coding staff on coding guidelines, regulations, and updates.

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or related field. Experience in lieu of formal degree will be considered.
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification required.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in medical coding, with 2 years in a supervisory or managerial role preferred.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Proficiency in medical coding systems (e.g., ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS).
  • Strong knowledge of coding guidelines, regulations, and compliance requirements.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and problem-solve in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with electronic health record (EHR) systems and coding software preferred.
