Vancouver, United States Mackay Sposito Full time
Job DescriptionJob Description

MacKay Sposito is seeking a mid to senior-level Environmental Scientist to join our team. This role is ideal for someone who loves balancing the built and natural environments, enjoys a variety of project types and locations, and also understands the true meaning of client service.

When you see the words “we’re just like family” in a job posting, do you run for the hills? We get it. But rest assured, when we say “family” at MacKay Sposito, we don’t mean your weird uncle. Think of us as your cool cousins: the ones you play ping pong and darts with at every reunion or actually look forward to meeting for happy hour. Because we like to do all that stuff, too (And don’t even get us started on cornhole tournaments or Chili Dog Day). Yes, we’re serious about our work – but we’re serious about fun, too. If that sounds good to you, let’s talk. Because life is too short to dread Mondays.

Our Environmental Science and Permitting group lives by our core values of honesty, dedication, and relationships. We make decisions every day based on these values, which drive us to do the right thing even when it’s hard. Our vision is to work with cool people on cool projects, and we want people on our team who will add to the realization of our goals.

Why join the MacKay Sposito team?

  • A people-first culture - We are dedicated to our employees and their families. We want to do what’s best for them, and their well-being helps drive our business decisions.
  • Strong business development team - This position is supported by a talented, organized, and proven business development team and processes.
  • Excellent reputation - Through our nearly 50-year history, MacKay Sposito has built and maintained an excellent reputation in our community and with our clients and business partners. You’ll be joining a team with a strong foundation and reputation that you can be proud to be part of.
  • We give back to the community - MacKay Sposito and our employees believe in giving back to the communities we serve. As a firm, we supported a host of local organizations focusing on our community pillars of veterans and youth. In 2023, our team members volunteered as commissioners, committee and board members, youth coaches, and a host of other volunteer positions and initiatives.

We intend to fill this position with a candidate who brings with them a critical and related set of skills, knowledge, and experiences. All are encouraged to apply, even those who believe they do not meet every single one of the qualifications. Simply put, we are interested in finding the best candidate for the job.

Responsibilities:

  • Support and manage natural resource and land use permitting solutions to help clients’ realize their goals related to environmental planning/permitting, and environmental reviews (e.g., federal/state/local natural resource permitting and environmental reviews, wetland and/or water resource permitting, Endangered Species Act consultations, NEPA/SEPA documentation, etc.).
  • Conduct field surveys for a variety of natural resources including fish, wildlife, and plants.
  • Conduct wetland/waters delineations to comply with federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Conduct functional assessments for streams and wetlands.
  • Use GPS and GIS technology to record natural resource locations in the field.
  • Manage and prepare technical reports for a variety of natural resource requirements including Biological Assessments, Critical Areas Reports, Shoreline Permits, 404/401 applications, NEPA/SEPA documents, etc.
  • Lead coordination with clients and city, county, state, and federal regulators.
  • Assist with business development and proposal activities.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in physical, natural, or environmental science, or similar related field.
  • Minimum of 3+ years of experience permitting natural resource impacts in Oregon and Washington.
  • Ability to read and interpret regulations.
  • Desire to develop strong relationships with staff, clients, and regulators.
  • Ability to prepare technical reports with great time management skills.
  • Drive to provide high-quality, technically accurate reports.
  • Detail-oriented mindset.
