Summary/Purpose

The Healthcare Instructor (Medical Billing & Coding) facilitates meaningful learning of the course competencies in the curriculum and proactively supports all facets of the learning environment. The Healthcare Instructor will be responsible for teaching the core Medical Administrative Assistant courses Medical Billing and Coding, Introduction to Insurance, Medical Office Procedures and Legal and Ethical principles, both in the online platform and in-person. This position continuously works to ensure Summit’s mission to prepare students for living wage jobs through training, curriculum development and classroom management. This position is 100% Onsite - Minneapolis, MN.

Essential Functions

  • Develops and designs curriculum specific to the core competencies of Summit Academy’s healthcare certificate programs.
  • Teaches students in a competency-based format through lectures, demonstration, and learning centered instruction.
  • Manages the learning environment through keeping accurate records, submitting grades and other reports on time, and enforcing school/campus academic and attendance policies.
  • Contributes to a learning culture by participating on curriculum and system task forces, supporting local campus events such as orientation and graduation and participating in various other workshops and meetings.
  • Plans appropriate differentiation strategies to address individual learning needs and styles of urban adult students.
  • Regularly assesses student learning by using multiple forms of assessment to determine grades in accordance with established standards and criteria.
  • Models learning and behavior consistent with expectations for students.
  • Teaches pro-social behavioral patterns conducive to success in the healthcare industry; for example: safety, health, ethics, employability and related skills.
  • Relates professional/life/industry experience to learning by the continuation of professional/technical skills development, the introduction of industry perspective into courses and the active awareness of professional/industry trends and opportunities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology, biology, body systems, HIPAA, and legal and ethical issues as they relate to the healthcare field

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional school setting which requires instructors to maintain professional appearance and attitude. The work environment is fast paced and requires time management and prioritization of job duties.

Physical Demands

This job requires the employee to stand for significant periods of time while instructing. In order to perform the necessary duties, the instructor must be able to hear and speak. This job requires 75% time instructing and moving and 25% sitting and doing paperwork. Instructor should be able to lift and files.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This position is full time 100% Onsite - Minneapolis, MN . The hours are 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday through Friday.

Travel

This position does not require travel.

Required Education & Experience

  • 1-2 years of field experience.
  • Experience with teaching adults
  • Associate’s degree in a health care related field.
  • Medical Billing and Coding experience

Preferred Education & Experience

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a health related field
  • More than 2 years teaching experience
  • Online teaching experience preferred
