South Sioux Animal Hospital is currently looking for a part-time veterinary assistant to join our team. The ideal candidate is efficient, self-motivated, approachable, positive, an adaptive learner, and prioritizes patient care.
At South Sioux Animal Hospital, we strive to provide the highest standards of care for every patient. We have digital x-ray, ultrasound, full in-house lab equipment, and computerized medical records. Job Responsibilities:
Veterinary assistants care for animals under the supervision of a veterinarian or veterinary technician. They are responsible for feeding, exercising, and maintaining cleanliness of the animals, and restraint during examinations and treatment. Vet assistants also sometimes perform lab work, such as drawing blood, collecting urine samples, and running appropriate tests on these samples.
Veterinary Assistant Duties:
- Veterinary assistants perform all aspects of routine pet care
- Check vitals/gather medical history in preparation for the veterinarian
- Prepping animals and instruments for surgery
- Assist during operations
- Monitoring animals under anesthesia
- Feed animals and monitor food/water intake
- Provide general nursing care
- Bathe pets when necessary
- Exercise the pets that are boarding
- Assist veterinarians and vet technicians with lab work
- Clean, sterilize, and maintain kennels, operating rooms, examining rooms and surgical equipment
- Comfort and restrain pets during examinations and procedures
- Provide first aid to pets in an emergency, stabilizing them until a doctor can take over
- Ready vaccines for appointments and administer medications to pets
- Educating pet owners about preventive care, treatments recommended by veterinarian and all services offered by the hospital
- Perform some clerical duties
Education, Training, & Certification:
This occupation does not require advanced education, but you will need training.
- Education: You will need a high school or equivalent diploma. Having completed a two-year Veterinary Assistant, postsecondary program will be advantageous.
- Bilingual: Spanish speaking capabilities would be an advantage
- Training: South Sioux Animal Hospital will provide on-the-job training, but someone who has had prior, relevant experience working with animals is preferred.
Veterinary Assistant Skills & Competencies:
In addition to formal training, there are personal qualities and soft skills that will help veterinary assistants succeed in this position.
Active Listening: veterinary assistants need to be able to follow the instructions of supervising veterinarians and obtain accurate histories from clients and understanding their concerns.
Verbal Communication: Assistants must be able to convey instructions from the veterinarians and technicians to clients.
Organizational Skills: Veterinary assistants need to keep track of lab specimens and medications for multiple animals. Attention to detail is a must.
Teamwork: Collaborating with veterinarians and veterinary assistants requires the capacity to coordinate actions with theirs.
Stamina: Veterinary assistants are on their feet most of the day, and sometimes they need to assist with restraining animals during tests or treatments. Must be physically capable of lifting up to 50 lbs.
Compassion: Veterinary assistants must work with animals who are sick, injured, or even dying, and their owners can be distraught. It is important to remain professional while still making animals and their owners as comfortable as possible.
Mental Strength: Ability to stay calm and empathetic while the client is concerned about their pet’s wellbeing.
Experience with AVImark clinic software preferred, but will train the right candidate
Occasional weekend and after hours on-call responsibility
