Treatment Plant Operator II

Job Summary: Operates sewage treatment, sludge processing, and disposal equipment in wastewater (sewage) treatment plant to control flow and processing of sewage.
Supervisory Functions:
Directly supervises two employees in the Waste Water Treatment Plants. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees, planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Essential Functions:
Regular and timely attendance at work.
Monitors operation of plant and makes necessary changes to keep plant within permit limits, and to maintain compliance with T.C.E.Q. regulations.
Operate plant in accordance with department procedures and instructions of the Wastewater Supervisor.
Identify and attempt to solve any situation that arises in the plant process or equipment, and bring any unusual observations, continuing, and/or serious problems to the attention of the Wastewater Supervisor.
Monitors control panels and adjust valves and gates manually or by remote control to regulate flow of sewage.
Observes variations in operating conditions and interprets meter and gauge readings and tests results to determine load requirements.
Starts and stops pumps, engines, and generators to control flow of raw sewage through filtering, settling, aeration, and sludge digestion processes.
Trouble-shoots any electrical problems and makes repairs as needed.
Maintains log of operations and records meter and gauge readings.
Collects sewage sample and conducts laboratory tests.
Maintains physical appearance of plant and insures proper housekeeping of the site and buildings.
Cuts and trims grass; paints, performs plumbing, fence construction, exterminating, and weed control as necessary.
Contributes to team effort by performing other related duties as assigned.
The employee in this position is required to remain available for immediate call-in due to any natural or man made disaster, or any other event the Water Treatment/Water Production Superintendent, the Director of Public Works, or the City Manager deem necessary.
Education, Experience, and Licenses:
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Three (3) years experience in the Wastewater Treatment, and Water Safety, required.
T.C.E.Q. Licenses required: Class "B" Waste Water Treatment
Valid, Class "C" Texas Driver's License required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; ability to write routine reports and correspondence; ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Knowledge of and ability to use Excel and Microsoft Word.
Ability to operate a vehicle for City business, back-hoe, fork lift, lawn mowers, weed eaters, hand tools, gas detector, self contained breathing apparatus, dissolved oxygen meter, p.h. meter, voltage meter, megger, and analogers.
Ability to adjust chlorine and sulfur dioxide as needed.
Ability to determine repair and maintenance needs.
Ability to understand legal requirements of job to accomplish the mutual goals of State and Local Government.
Ability to perform in-house training as needed.
Knowledge of pump and motor service and repair

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; extreme cold and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
