NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK
Under general supervision employees in this class are responsible for the testing, repairing and maintaining water irrigation systems for compliance with applicable codes and regulatory standards governing maintenance and testing of irrigation systems. Position exercises considerable independent judgment concerning methods, materials, and priority of assigned work orders.
Work involves the responsibility for identifying turf-related diseases, insect and weed infestation, and applying appropriate fertilizer, pesticides, or other chemicals as necessary. Work requires professional training and experience in irrigation systems in accordance with water need, facility use and precipitation/penetration rates. Work is received in the form of work orders, inspections, or general improvement programs and is evaluated through adherence to schedules and standards, observation, inspections, and review of work and material reports.
Employees in this class may be required to work overtime, evenings and weekends. Exposure to hazardous pesticide and fertilizer chemicals requires the employee to wear proper equipment and adhere to department safety guidelines.
Key Responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities enumerated in this class specification are for the purpose of determining a common set of minimum qualifications and salary level for all positions in this class. They are not intended to include all of the essential job functions of all positions in the class.)
Assists in performing skilled craft-mechanical trades work in various installation, repair and maintenance of irrigation systems to comply with state requirements.
Assists in maintaining records related to equipment operation and maintenance, supplies and equipment; maintains daily activity logs, inventory and maintenance record.
Assists in providing guidance and training to employees in techniques, methods, and use and care of equipment and tools.
Assists in budget preparation, planning and resource allocation.
Performs cleaning and maintenance of equipment, tools, and materials; ensures adherence to principles and practices of safe equipment use and operation.
Skills, Knowledge and ExpertiseKnowledge of landscape maintenance practices to include operation and repair of irrigation systems.
Knowledge of industrial standards and regulation pertaining to irrigation operations.
Knowledge of nutrient and pesticide management, chemistry, physics, hydrology, meteorology, soils and geology, turf grass, athletic field construction and irrigation technology and practices.
Knowledge of basic techniques of training and supervision.
Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions appropriate in the construction, maintenance, and use of athletic park facilities.
Knowledge of materials, tools and methods used in the installation and repair of irrigation systems.
Skill in the use of tools, diagnostic equipment, trenching and other construction equipment used in irrigation activities.
Ability to plan, coordinate irrigation cycles in accordance with maintenance schedules, facility use, weather and soil conditions.
Ability to maintain records and prepare reports of time, materials, and work accomplished.
Ability to conduct water precipitation and penetration tests and interpret results.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Ability to use good judgment and make sound decisions in accordance with established procedures and policies.
Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school; experience in the maintenance of turf and irrigation systems; and a valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license.
