Redwood Trust, Inc (NYSE: RWT) is hiring a trading analyst to help manage Redwood’s $3.4 billion investment portfolio. Our Investment Portfolio consists of investments sourced organically through our Residential and Business Purpose Mortgage Banking operating businesses as well as through other partnerships and third parties. Reporting to the VP Capital Markets, the RMBS/CMBS Trading Analyst will perform in-depth financial analysis on existing and new fixed income investments for Redwood Trust, specifically backed by residential and commercial real estate. The successful candidate will have interest or prior experience with investments, financial models, and real estate. On a daily basis, the Trading Analyst will work closely with the broader capital markets team to present new securities or whole loan trade ideas. The analyst will also be responsible for interfacing with the executive team of Redwood Trust, updating key personnel on the current performance and risk of the Investment Portfolio. The analyst will also be responsible for assisting/executing whole loan trades in Redwood’s CoreVest business unit. CoreVest is the leading lender to residential and commercial real estate investors.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Source and pitch new investments ideas in RMBS, CMBS, and mortgage loans to the VP of Capital Markets.
  • Identify market themes and trends to formulate a thesis on intermediate-term performance.
  • Understanding of discounted cash flow analysis and the three (3) financial statements; especially as they relate to real estate and securities. Basic Excel/financial modelling skills are required.
  • Build and analyze complex financial models, conduct market research, and identify relevant company information to present to VP Capital Markets and SVP Capital Markets.
  • Manage the financing of Redwood’s securities and whole loan portfolios through secured repurchase or securitization.
  • Formulate hedging strategies based on the underlying interest rate and credit risk of our investments in securities and whole loans.
  • Prepare investment memos, conduct monthly performance reviews, PNL reports, risk reports, and assist with recommendations on purchases and sales of investments.
  • Excellent writing and presentation development skills to produce clean, concise, and accurate documents/reports.
  • Able to work in a fluid environment, providing accurate information - often on short timelines.
  • Provide assistance to senior capital markets team members in implementing capital markets initiatives, product positioning, expanding our distribution channels, executing transaction financings and identifying growth opportunities.
  • Candidate must possess an entrepreneurial mindset, a high level of motivation, and interest in growing a business.

Minimum Requirements:

  • 0-2 years of work experience with a bachelor’s degree in in Finance, Economics, Real Estate, Engineering or related fields.
  • Interest in the RMBS/CMBS mortgage sectors, securitizations, and structures.
  • Strong analytical skills with financial modeling experience
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent Excel skills
  • Strong attention to detail and a high level of organization
  • Interest/experience in commercial lending or investment analysis a plus – equity, fixed income, real estate, single family rental, multifamily, bridge (fix and flip), ground up lending
  • Aspirations of a CFA charter is a plus

A reasonable estimate of the base compensation range for this role is $85 - 115K annually. The actual salary offer to the successful candidate will be based on job-related education, geographic location, training, licensure and certification, and other factors.
