For the past 20 years, Navarro has led environmental remediation at the Nevada National Security Site. We have expanded our services to Deactivation & Decommissioning (D&D) work. This position will support that work.

The Health Physicist III is responsible for the development and implementation of the Radiological Safety Program, as assigned. The Health Physicist III may assist in the development and maintenance of professional organizational relationships with the Radiation Safety Prime Contractor and the DOE Client.

General Responsibilities and Knowledge Skills:

  • Under limited supervision, performs inspections of environmental restoration sites and observes decontamination/decommissioning site activities.
  • Acts as the subject matter expert for radiation safety programs and radiological instrumentation, as assigned.
  • Education and applied experience are needed to develop, implement, and maintain a radiation safety program that is compliant with regulations and requirements.
  • Skill and ability to perform moderately complex professional tasks with limited supervision and guidance.
  • Ability to organize own work and to set priorities independently to meet established objectives, using discretion in performing duties.
  • Ability to develop and lead field projects, including defining scope, objectives and methods.
  • Ability to have a positive impact on organizational success and productivity, with some latitude for independent judgment.
  • Possesses the level of language skills, mathematical skills, communication skills, reasoning ability and computer skills necessary to perform essential functions of the job.

Specific Responsibilities and Knowledge/Skills:

  • Conducts site-specific analysis of radiological hazards and recommends engineering controls, worker training, dosimetry, exposure monitoring, site controls, and emergency preparedness actions necessary to provide a safe workplace.
  • Verifies and enforces compliance with government and industry radiation protection standards and requirements, including applicable Department of Energy orders and regulations.
  • Provides requirements and/or supervises the conduct of radiological surveys for the collection and processing of samples of soil, water, vegetation and other environmental media.
  • Provides requirements and/or supervises the conduct of radiological surveys for the unrestricted release of items/equipment.
  • Provide input and requirements for the development of “MARSSIM/MARSAME like” radiological characterization surveys of buildings and equipment in support of D&D work.
  • Provide radiological analysis for air dispersion modeling for the open-air demolition of radiologically contaminated buildings.
  • Develop training, train, and mentor Radiological Control Technicians (RCTs). Develop on-the-job-training/evaluations (OJT/OJE) and continuing training programs for RCT staff.
  • Prepare detailed plans, procedures and technical documents to support implementation of radiological monitoring and controls programs.
  • Recommends appropriate personnel monitoring devices, protective equipment and controls for radiological work.
  • Seeks-out and recommends changes to work environment to maximize employee safety and helps develop health physics procedures.
  • Collects and interprets data from personnel monitoring instruments and from radiation recording instruments for analysis and inclusion in summary reports.
  • Compiles and retains records regarding the calibration of personnel monitoring instruments and other radiation measurement instruments.
  • Leads and/or provides support for program compliance evaluations, makes corrective action recommendations, and tracks implementation of corrective actions.
  • Implements and maintains a process for interfacing with the site Radiological Safety Prime Contractor (RSPC) internal and external dosimetry programs.
  • Maintains records and supporting data for required government, industry and management reports.
  • Trains and mentors Radiological Controls Technicians.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, health physics, engineering or equivalent training and experience,
  • Minimum of 6 years professional experience in radiation safety, which includes at a minimum of 3 years at a DOE/NRC facility and at least one year of field experience.
  • Advanced degrees and/or progression toward certification (Certified Health Physicist) are desired and may be substituted for a portion of the experience requirement.

Working Conditions:

  • Primary work location is in Las Vegas, NV at the Navarro office located in the Molasky Building.
  • Field work may be required to be performed as workplace site visits for planning, training, performance of inspections and assessments etc. at the DOE Nevada National Security Site (65 miles NW of Las Vegas).
  • If conducting work in the field, physical effort may be required, up to and not limited to lifting, bending, reaching, standing and walking for long periods of time.
  • May require travel and performing work at remote locations.
  • Navarro works on a Monday through Thursday 4 X10 work week. Limited remote work away from the office may be approved on a case-by-case basis.
  • Limited overtime may be required to complete assigned tasks.
