Position Summary
The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) works as part of a healthcare team to provide treatment to patients who need psychiatric care in an outpatient clinic setting. The PMHNP provides direct patient care, which can include counseling, medication prescribing, and education. Will help patients find the coping mechanisms, medications, and treatments that assist them in managing their mental health conditions. The ideal candidate will be compassionate and dedicated to serving the healthcare needs of our community.
Essential Duties
- Provides psychiatric care to patients, seeing an average of 10-12 patients per day.
- Diagnoses mental illnesses and prescribes medications.
- Providers emergency psychiatric services, and physical and psychosocial examination of their patients.
- Develops appropriate treatment plans and provides effective management of patient care with proper evaluation.
- Performs individual therapy and assessments.
- Provides staff and family consultation around medications and other clinical concerns.
- Collaborates with all members of the healthcare team.
- Promotes evidence-based care with a healing culture for the patient population served and their families.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Clinics Administrator or CEO.
Education and Skills
- Possess and maintain graduate professional Nurse, and Nurse Practitioner registration in California, which must be unrestricted, current, complete, and active
- Obtain Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner or Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certification from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), preferred.
- Possess a bachelor’s degree in nursing, followed by a master’s degree in Psychiatric or Mental Health Nursing from a California-approved and accredited school for professional nursing training, preferred.
- 5+ years' experience working as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner
- Proficient in the English language, both in writing and speaking to be able to communicate clearly with all stakeholders, including patients, families, clinic staff, and other healthcare professionals
- Possess a strong understanding of societies and their impact on mental health; ability to solve problems, monitor and examine patients
- Be compassionate, sensitive, and possess strong reasoning and thinking skills
- Possess strong computer skills, including working with medical software applications
- Knowledge of healthcare regulations and standards, including those specific to tribal and FQHC settings preferred
- Commitment to providing culturally competent care to diverse patient populations.
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced clinical environment.
- Willingness to uphold the values and mission of Mathiesen Memorial Health Clinic and the tribal community it serves.
Physical Requirements
- Sitting and/or standing for short or extended periods.
- Clear speaking and adequate hearing to communicate effectively and respond appropriately in person and/or on the telephone.
- Vision sufficient to read source materials and computer screen data, with or without corrective lenses.
- Repetitive motions for computer equipment use.
- Occasional lifting to 25 pounds.
- The ability to deal well with time constraints and emotional stress is necessary.

Working Conditions
Outpatient clinic setting, Monday through Friday. No weekends. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to airborne particles and the potential risk of airborne pathogens. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
