Internship Summary

The Galveston Park Board Recreation and Education Intern will become well-versed in the scope of the Park Board's parks and the eco-system of our beaches, including park operations and asset management, recreation services, and the management of natural and cultural resources.

The Outdoor Recreation and Education Intern will research existing relevant educational content that aligns with the topics of coastal conservation, coastal and marine wildlife, and/or Galveston beaches and shoreline heritage. The Recreation and Education Intern's main deliverables will be to network with community partner agencies to explore program opportunities, assisting with environmental initiatives, deliver programs, connect with marketing to promote the programs, and connect with the parks operations teams to efficiently execute programs. Current partner agencies include the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network, Artist Boat, Galveston Island Nature Tourism Council, and other vital agencies within our coastal community.

Minimal Qualifications

    • Good research skills to locate relevant content
    • Detail oriented, highly organized, effective time management and the ability to manage multiple priorities at once
    • Data collection and analysis skills, Proficient in Excel
    • Effective oral and written skills
    • Familiarity with social media and general marketing vocabulary will be helpful to promote programs
    • Friendly disposition is needed to work with partner agencies and the public
    • This position will need to be able to work remotely and be able to work in person when needed
    • Must be able to tolerate outdoor conditions and conduct site visits to become familiar with the park locations
    • Some classes and/or experience in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Tourism and Coastal Community Development, Hospitality & Tourism Management, Parks & Recreation Management, Marine and/or Coastal Management is a plus

Required current certifications, licenses, and trainings.

    • High School Diploma or equivalent required
    • Must hold a current and valid Class C Driver's License
    • Must complete Certified Tourism Ambassador class upon hire

Work Schedule

    • Varies - minimum 10 hours/week
    • Semesters
      • Summer I (June - August)

Essential Tasks

    • Network with new and existing community partners.
    • Assist with the development and execution of three educational programs
    • Assist in the management of current environmental programming including, but not limited to: Beach Toy Borrow Box, Up2U, Women in Coastal Science, the Galveston Beach Ambassadors, and Volunteer Clean-ups.
    • Update and Enhance 101 Days of Summer Calendar which will highlight existing and new educational content, community partners, and outdoor recreation
    • Organize archival records and develop classification systems to facilitate access to archival materials
    • Shadowing Expectations
      • Environmental Coordinator - To learn about coastal conservation, outreach, and data collection/analysis
      • Beach Parks Manager - To learn about the management of coastal park operations
      • Director of Coastal Projects - To learn about management of natural and cultural resources (Beach Nourishment)
      • Parks Special Events Manager - To learn about facility rentals and leveraging our parks through enriched programming

This is a volunteer unpaid position. Training, workstation & essential equipment, CTA Certification, Park Board uniform and/or name badge and free access to Parks are provided benefits.
