Since 1967, Helen Keller National Center (HKNC) has been committed to improving the lives of individuals who are DeafBlind or have a combined hearing and vision loss. HKNC is dedicated to working with each person to achieve their desired goals towards independence, employment, and quality of life, based on their talents, preferences and aspirations. We currently have an exciting part time career opportunity available to join the HKNC team as a American Sign Language Interpreter. The Interpreter is responsible for through providing in-house interpreting to consumers, staff and outside visitors as needed.
Shifts Available:
Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday (11:00am – 6:45 PM)
Monday, Thursday, Friday (11:00am – 6:45 PM)
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Provide in-house interpreting as required.
- Provide instruction in American Sign Language and Pro-Tactile and/ or adaptation to
- accessible Communication to staff and students as assigned.
- Provide communications training to assigned students
- Provide consumer education related to interpreting issues.
- May be required to teach and interpret for selected staff/students and others, other than the regularly scheduled work period. If this is daytime hours will be adjusted accordingly.
- Maintain daily progress notes on assigned students and submit regular written reports to supervisor.
- Assist in the preparation of learning aids, materials and curriculum.
- Participate in meetings to understand the unique issues of students and plan a team approach for solving these issues.
- Accompany and serve as guide and/or interpreter for students and professional staff
- members and guests, when assigned. To accomplish this, it may be required to use personal vehicle on occasion, or travel to field sites, meetings, etc. Some evening hours may be scheduled based upon students or staff needs. Must be flexible with work schedule and travel when necessary.
- Shares responsibility for the equipment and general appearance of the work area.

REQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Required Bachelor’s degree.
- Required ITP (Interpreting Training Program- must have passed written RID test) RID/NAD NIC Knowledge test must have passed. Two or three years of interpreting experience with individuals who are DeafBlind and/or deaf-visually impaired.
- Must obtain RID/NAD NIC certification within 5 years of employment.

*Applicants may opt to accept this position as a No-Frills employee.
