The Manager, Policy & Practice assists and coordinates with the Chief Policy Officer, the Manager, Health Care Access Policy, and other Government Relations and Practice department staff in aspects of the practice of hematology related to policy, advocacy, and projects/activities consistent with Society priorities. Policy topics in this portfolio include maternal health, drug shortages, laboratory testing, workforce, and physician resilience and well-being issues impacting the practice of hematology.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Legislative/Policy Responsibilities:

  • Analyzes and monitors legislation and federal policy related to maternal health, drug shortages, laboratory testing, workforce, and physician resilience and well-being (including administrative burdens associated with hematology practice such as prior authorization issues), consistent with Society policy, political opportunity, and the goals of Society leaders.
  • Assists with research on practice-related policy issues, legislation and federal programs.
  • Draft policy letters, correspondence, and statements on issues and programs within portfolio.
  • Helps to plan and attends relevant meetings and/or hearings and briefings as needed on Capitol Hill or with Federal agencies.
  • Prepares summaries and reports and provides oral presentations to ASH Committee on Practice and other relevant committees on policy issues and programs in portfolio.

Committee on Practice Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates Committee on Practice virtual and in person meetings/calls and practice related webinars with Chief Policy Officer and Manger, Health Care Access Policy, and other relevant staff.
  • Assists with logistics and content planning for Committee and work group meetings/calls with ASH practice leaders and relevant staff.
  • Prepares electronic meeting notebooks and reviews meeting minutes.
  • Prepares general correspondence and provides information and assistance to relevant Committee and Society members concerning conferences, meetings, and current policy issues.

Other Practice-Related Projects:

  • Provides content for ASH Practice Update and other departmental newsletters and documents.
  • Creates and maintains practice-related resources in collaboration with other ASH departments.
  • Manages the administration of the ASH Clinicians in Practice group and assists with development and implementation of ASH Clinicians in Practice Lunch program.
  • Manages administration of and fosters professional relationships with Hematology/Oncology State Societies and coordinates quarterly check-in zoom meetings.
  • Collaborates with Manager, Health Care Access Policy on the planning and implementation of annual Medicare Carrier Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting; manages administration of and fosters professional relationships with Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) medical directors.
  • Assists Manager, Health Care Access Policy on AMA House of Delegates review of policy resolutions and other related activities.

Other Projects and Programs:

  • Manages Society-wide activities related to Maternal Health and Hematology, including coordination of ASH Working Group on Maternal Health and Hematology.
  • Oversees Society-wide activities related to physician burnout and well-being, including coordination of ASH Physician Well-Being and Resilience Working Group.
  • Manages biannual ASH Practice Survey.
  • Serves as general resource to assist department staff with programs and projects.
  • Occasional attendance at and/or support of ASH-sponsored meetings and events outside of normal working hours (evenings and/or weekends).

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE SKILL REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • At least 5 years of related experience in the professional environment with progressive responsibility; health care policy interest and/or experience strongly preferred.
  • Capitol Hill, Federal Government, or government relations interest and experience preferred.
  • Association management experience in health care organization or medical specialty society preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills required.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail required.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage multiple deadlines.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Internet skills required. Basic knowledge of HTML, web standards, and social media (Twitter, Facebook, etc) preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUREMENTS

  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to use computers, telephones, and other office equipment.
  • May require some out-of-town work travel.

ASH has a hybrid work environment, with core in-office days for all ASH staff on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, and telework on Mondays and Fridays for eligible positions. The Society’s headquarters is in Washington, DC, and is within walking distance of several Metro stations on the Blue/Orange/Silver and Red lines.
