Testing and inspecting construction materials in the field according to standard test methods and AET operating procedures and completing written reports for client and internal use.


Essential Functions

  • Pre- and post-construction condition evaluations, vibration monitoring, building material sampling, non-destructive concrete testing, vibration/noise monitoring, and fire stop inspections.
  • Learn to prepare for and plan field work operations in accordance with project scope, ASTM guidelines, and project manager instruction.
  • Communicate and coordinate with project manager for field work scheduling.
  • Create reports for tests, observations, evaluations, and analyses under observation and with assistance from project manager or upper-level engineer.
  • Complete reporting component of projects within 3 days of field work unless otherwise communicated with project manager.
  • Learn Radan software to assist with ground-penetrating radar (GPR) data analysis.
  • Operate within the Microsoft Office suite, including but not limited to, understanding how to program equations in Excel and format a Word document.
  • Communication skills including technical writing, sufficient to convey complex technical information to diverse audiences.
  • Collaborate with co-workers to complete job duties.
  • Obtain lift operator certification (at AET).
  • Have or obtain and maintain ACI Adhesive Anchor Inspector Certification.
  • Capable of physical labor with personal protective equipment and able to lift 80 lbs.
  • Capable of working non-standard hours and traveling up to a week at a time.

Other Areas of Accountability
  • Conduct field, laboratory, and office activities in a manner consistent with federal, state, and local regulations, along with AET’s QA and Health and Safety Policies, to promote the safety and protection of employees, clients and the public.
  • Assist QA Representative with equipment calibration; perform routine maintenance; recommend purchases of new or replacement equipment to Division Manager; assist in developing and implementing QA/QC procedures and policies for the Division.
  • Maintain valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record. Position requires use of personal vehicle for company business.
  • Duties often outdoors and away from the main office.
  • Properly use and maintain company instruments and equipment.
  • Maintain current working knowledge of applicable regulations, policies, procedures, and technologies in designated field(s).
  • Participate in at least one professional organization.
  • Continue progress toward professional engineering registration.
  • Coordinate with project manager to complete assigned projects within budget and time allotted for tasks within the deadline.
  • Perform other tasks as necessary to meet departmental or company goals.

Qualifications and Education Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Architectural, or Construction Engineering.
  • 0-3 years of related experience.

Preferred Skills
  • Knowledge of fundamental engineering or scientific principles within specialty area and ability to apply that knowledge to the job.
  • Experience with quality control testing of construction materials is preferred.
  • Ability to work at industrial and construction sites and perform field work including, but not limited to, collecting samples, operating field instruments, driving lifts, being at heights, and possess awareness of confined space work or the ability to learn.
  • Experience analyzing and interpreting data, accurately observing and recording field activities, reading plans, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Mechanical aptitude to work effectively with instrumentation, hand tools, and ladders.
  • Ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of people, work effectively within project teams, resolve issues and problems in a constructive manner, and work independently in the field.


Work Environment

This job primarily operates in a professional office environment. This position also may require field work in outdoor conditions on construction sites with uneven ground and adverse weather conditions. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers.

The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands or finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50-100 pounds. The employee will occasionally push or pull equipment weighing up to 200 pounds. The employee is required to frequently work outside. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
