The Programs Transportation Aide assists in all transportation needs for donations and clients for the three primary Central Iowa Programs: Refugee Services, the Food Pantry, and the Emergency Family Shelter. Position supervised by the Director of Programs and will work closely with the Program Managers of each program. Position responsibilities require regular lifting, twisting, rotating, and other physical requirements.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


Food Pantry

  • Conduct routine pickups of food donations by truck from food vendors.
  • Maintain positive interactions and relationships with vendors, donors, clients, staff, and volunteers.
  • Perform repetitive squatting, lifting, and carrying motions while loading and unloading items from the truck.
  • Coordinate with the Food Pantry Program Manager regarding food donations that are not typically received on a routine basis.
  • Complete deliveries between Catholic Charities programs and partners as requested.

Refugee Services

  • Assist Refugee Services Logistics Coordinator with donation pick up and client bus training as needed.
  • Provide transportation of refugee clients including, but not limited to, airport pickups, doctor’s visits, job interviews, cultural orientation and school enrollment appointments. Work closely with Case Managers to schedule time efficiently.
  • Assist setting up apartments for newly arriving refugees with Refugee Services Logistics Coordinator, Case Managers, and volunteers. This includes lifting and carrying heavy items, sometimes up stairs and in tight areas.
  • Record client interactions in case notes and keep updated records as necessary.
  • Deliver all services in a culturally and linguistically appropriate manner; provide translation and interpretation services as needed to facilitate refugees’ participation in the services specified; work with third-party interpreters when necessary.

Emergency Family Shelter

  • Assist with furniture moves to and from the Catholic Charities warehouse.
  • Assist with donation pick-ups/drop-offs for the EFS program.
  • Assist families with receiving donations from organizations and delivering to their new home.
  • Pick up and deliver groceries/supplies as requested by the Program Manager or Shelter Coordinator to the EFS.
  • Assist with client transportation in coordination with applicable staff.

General

  • Participate in staff meetings and events as requested.
  • Log mileage traveled and gasoline filled in organization vehicles.
  • Take organization vehicles in for maintenance when scheduled.
  • Provide support to Pastoral Center staff with moving furniture and donation pick-ups as necessary.
Requirements:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Demonstrate proficient computer skills and familiarity of Microsoft Office software applications including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. May also require the ability to use Access, and desktop publishing software as required. Ability to learn and effectively use various data collection and database management systems to record data as required. Demonstrate familiarity and proficiency with Internet tools and techniques for searching, extracting, and processing information.
  • Exhibit good interpersonal communications skills including the ability to establish and set strong personal boundaries. Keep others adequately informed and exhibit good team building abilities. Express ideas and thoughts clearly in both written and verbal form. Exhibit good listening and comprehension skills; seek clarification when needed, and select and use appropriate communication methods. Ability to communicate and interact with a wide variety of people having diverse social concerns and problems. Ability to communicate the mission and services of Catholic Charities both within the agency and community.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Knowledge of standard office procedures including alphabetic and numeric filing, mail processing, and record keeping. Ability to meet deadlines by effectively organizing and prioritizing work assignments while managing frequent interruptions. Knowledge and ability to operate various office machines including: printer, copier, scanner, fax machine, telephone, and calculator.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable access to an insured vehicle meeting agency coverage requirements.
  • Applicants must be able to successfully pass a child abuse registry check and criminal background check. A clean driving record is also required.
  • The employee must regularly lift up to 50 pounds; occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds; and rarely lift up to 125 pounds.
