New York, United States Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Full time
Job DescriptionJob Description

Bedford-Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, founded in 1967, is the nation’s first community development corporation nestled in the heart of Central Brooklyn in Bed-Stuy. Located at Restoration Plaza, a 300,000 square foot commercial complex that offers a mix of retail, dining, recreation and entertainment, this historic organization is steeped in its mission to close the racial wealth gap. We provide direct services across an economic mobility platform centered on workforce development, affordable housing/homeownership, community revitalization, small business development and arts and culture to 60,000 people annually.

About the Role

The Brooklyn Business Center at Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Development Corporation is seeking a Graduating Fellow, beginning spring 2024. The fellow will work primarily on projects that provide technical assistance to small businesses. The fellow will assist with communications to businesses, data entry, financial analysis, developing calls to action, providing support with very basic bookkeeping, and researching resources including access to capital for small businesses.

This work is rooted mainly in research, financial analysis, light presentation preparation, and content collection. The fellow will also have an opportunity to work on-site at the Center, supporting events and client services, and assisting with small business programming.

Fellowships are intended for upperclassmen currently enrolled in programs in finance, accounting, marketing, economic development, business management, or related disciplines.

This intern fellowship is designed to give students entering the small business sector hands-on administrative, project management, financial analysis, and small business technical assistance experience, and critical thinking skills. This fellowship is ideal for students interested in supporting the growth of small businesses, practicing financial analysis skills, community-building, and project management and research.

Strong communication and organization skills are a must, as is the ability to be a self-starter. Fellows are required to make a minimum time commitment of 10 – 15 hours per week.

About the Brooklyn Business Center

The Brooklyn Business Center (BBC) has become a go-to source for helping aspiring entrepreneurs, business owners, and managers of existing organizations. The BBC is a division of the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation (BSRC), a non-profit and the first Community Development Corporation in the US.

The BBC is funded in part by the New York State Entrepreneurial Assistance program and is an Entrepreneurial Assistance Center. The BBC’s services include 1-on-1 business coaching, access to capital, mentoring, business planning support, and assistance with preparing MWBE applications. We also assist with providing third-party resources such as free legal services.

In the past five years, the BBC has enabled clients to increase revenues by $3.1 million, obtain $2.4 million in financing, add 91 new employees, and retain 85 employees.

●Be able to commit 10-15 hours per week over a period determined in advance (exact weeks to be determined with intern fellow)

● Have at least 1 – 2 years of experience interning/working on research and/or project(s) that demonstrate competency with analytical and critical thinking skills

● Have at least 1 – 2 years of experience interning/working in a professional non-profit or corporate environment or working directly with small businesses demonstrating an ability to translate concepts and communicate calls to action to a target audience of small businesses

● Demonstrate strong communication and presentation skills both written and oral
