Job Overview: Client's Data Services Team is seeking a Java developer for a termed contract basis to collaborate with Research and Instructional Technology and Digital Libraries Technology Services. The primary objective of this role is to upgrade the Geoserver instance underlying our spatial data repository, a vital service provided to client's researchers. The successful candidate will work closely with cross-functional teams to develop, upgrade, and document our research repository infrastructure supporting spatial data.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Research and Instructional Technology and Digital Libraries Technology Services teams to upgrade the Geoserver system supporting the spatial data repository.
  • Develop, upgrade, and document the research repository infrastructure.
  • Ensure the proper functioning and integration of the updated Geoserver system with the GeoBlacklight platform.
  • Clean and optimize data in various formats.
  • Contribute to code reviews, bug fixes, and support activities.
  • Document workflows efficiently and provide staff training as needed.
  • Collaborate with the GeoBlacklight Community to ensure compatibility and best practices.

Required Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in Linux command line utilities and standard Git best practices.
  • Experience in data cleaning and optimization.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in standing and maintaining a Geoserver instance.
  • Familiarity with Geospatial metadata and files (e.g., shapefile, geodatabase, Lidar data).
  • Prior experience in code reviews, bug fixes, and support.
  • Ability to efficiently document workflows and train staff.
  • Ability to collaborate with the GeoBlacklight Community.
  • Experience working in a hybrid/remote setting.
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher.
  • 2+ years of prior experience as a web app developer or similar position.
  • 2+ years’ of prior experience developing applications with Java and Maven-based applications (Geoserver experience ideal).
  • Experience deploying to the Cloud environment (AWS preferred), with an understanding of core services (e.g., EC2, S3, RDS or equivalents).
  • Understanding of PostGIS or similar frameworks.
  • Experience deploying Java applications with web servers and servlet containers like Tomcat or Eclipse Jetty.
