Job Description

UPMC Mercy is Western Pennsylvania’s only hospital with a combined Level I Regional Resource Trauma Center and Comprehensive Burn Center under one roof. UPMC Mercy is also the home of our Rehabilitation Institute, which is one of the of the leading rehabilitation programs in the United States as well as a dedicated Comprehensive Stroke Center as accredited by the Joint and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. 


We are hiring a full-time Clinician Fellow/Clinician to support our 6F Stroke Rehab unit



This position is eligible for a generous sign-on bonus $20,000 sign-on bonus available for nurses with 1 or more years of experience. Candidates hired into a sign-on bonus eligible role will be asked to make a two-year work commitment.



Title and salary will be determined based upon education and nursing experience. Those with 2 years of experience and/or those without their BSN will be brought in at the Clinician Fellow title and pay range. Salary as shown is for a Clinician. 



At UPMC Mercy’s 24-bed stroke rehabilitation unit, each patient receives both an individualized and multidisciplinary approach to stroke care.  UPMC Mercy is a dedicated Comprehensive Stroke Center as accredited by the Joint Commission and UPMC Rehabilitation is proud to continue to support patients through each phase of rehabilitation and recovery throughout their continuum of care.  We are dedicated to guiding and supporting patients and families through the challenges of stroke rehabilitation, and we recognize that each person’s needs are different.  Our team encompasses the physiatrist who oversees rehabilitation techniques, medical management, and methods of treating and preventing impairment in conjunction with UPMC Mercy.  The patient care team also includes rehabilitation nurses who manage various aspects of the patients care and education; physical therapists who focus on restoring movement and function; occupational therapist who work with the patient on recovering skill needed for everyday living; speech language pathologist who work with communication, swallowing, and cognition; Case Managers who help direct each patients plan of care;  neuropsychologist’s who help treat a patients memory, thinking, and concentration, and amongst some of the specialties that we have to offer our patient’s.  As one of the leading rehabilitation programs in the United States, stroke patients at the UPMC Rehabilitation Institute have access to state-of-the-art technology and comprehensive services to assist with stroke recovery and comprehensive outpatient services.



Clinician Fellows/Clinicians work in collaboration with their Unit Director, management, and other caregivers to coordinate clinical activities for each shift, develop and educate staff on the unit, and improve the nursing process. Clinician Fellows/Clinicians inspire superior performance on their unit through example, not only by exhibiting their own expertise in patient care assignments, but also by providing ongoing consultation and education for their team, including in-service demonstrations of new devices, equipment, and policy changes.


 


As a Clinician Fellow/Clinician, you will be a positive force on the unit, a relationship builder who promotes open communication among caregivers and forges connections between colleagues, patients, and patients’ families. You will also directly contribute to a culture of nursing excellence by participating in the selection, training, development, and evaluation of our staff.


 


The Clinician Fellow/Clinician, in collaboration with other health care professionals, applies superior clinical knowledge and skills to achieve quality patient care outcomes. The Clinician Fellow/Clinician is responsible for providing service-based education and clinical expertise for staff including orientation and training, consultation on practice issues and general coordination of clinical activities on a shift basis. They must demonstrate the knowledge and skills to provide care that is relevant to patients under their care, as well as apply principles of growth and development over the life span. The Clinician Fellow/Clinician also must possess the ability to assess and interpret patient data needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age specific needs. The Clinician Fellow/Clinician demonstrates a commitment to the community and to the nursing profession.

  • Minimum 3 years of nursing experience for a Clinician title




  • Minimum 2 years of nursing experience for a Clinician Fellow title




  • Master's degree preferred.




  • BS/BSN required for Clinician: 




    • If BS degree not in nursing, a Master's or higher degree in Nursing is required.






  • Demonstrated competence as a Professional Staff Nurse.




  • The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below.




  • Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.




  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.




  • Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.




  • Exemplary clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical and problem solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care.




  • Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of the nursing process.




  • Mobility and visual manual dexterity. 




  • Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting and positioning of patients.





Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:




  • Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in practicing state.




  • National Certification preferred.




  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire




  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)




  • Registered Nurse (RN)




  • Act 34
