The Kenyon Review is conducting a search for a qualified candidate to serve as Managing Editor. The Managing Editor of The Kenyon Review is a full-time position responsible for overseeing the production schedule, assigning materials to the editorial team and Associates, and liaising with writers and agents. The Managing Editor is also responsible for grant applications and working as a part of a team to execute the organization’s strategic plan. The Managing Editor position often works in collaboration with the Editor, the Director of Operations, Assistant Managing Editor, as well as with other staff members and contractors. In-person or hybrid work is preferred.

Essential Functions

  • Oversee the print and web production and scheduling of The Kenyon Review. Coordinate with readers, editors, authors, designers, copyeditors, proofreaders, printer, and distributors.
  • Write copy for and oversee production of monthly KR Newsletters.
  • Assign content; establish deadlines; communicate with writers, editors, and Associates.
  • Manage key relationships with vendors, supervising printing, fulfillment, digital delivery, and other strategic relationships.
  • Draft grant and foundation applications and reports; seek new potential funding sources where appropriate.
  • Manage Submittable system for assignment of pieces to readers and editors. Track author contracts, payments, and contact information. Provide training for the editorial team on Submittable best practices.
  • Coordinate outreach and promotion for contests and special features, guest-edited folio submission opportunities, campus, AWP, and issue-launch events, and fellowship applications.
  • Manage four student interns tasked with assigning submissions to editors and Associates, reading and recommending contest submissions, and other miscellaneous editorial and research tasks.
  • Assist the Editor in short-term and long-term strategic organizational planning.
  • Assist the Editor with oversight of the editorial process and staff. Meet weekly with editorial team to discuss work for inclusion in the journal, align editorial work with print production schedule.
  • Work with the Director of Operations and the Operations Assistant to implement, maintain and evaluate the information systems used by the organization for essential data warehousing, subscriptions tracking and fulfillment, and mailings.
  • Work with the Director of Operations on renewal and expiration communications and cadence, print runs, annual publishing budget, subscription promotions, and distribution of complimentary subscriptions.
  • Represent the organization at key conferences and events. Organize staff attendance at Association for Writers & Writing Programs (AWP) annual conference
  • Manage timely special projects as mutually defined by the Editor. Projects may include special publications, website development, digitized archive presentation, book reviews, visual branding adjustments, etc.

Non-essential Functions

  • Administer BoardEffect software platform, including compiling board kits ahead of Kenyon Review Board of Trustee meetings. Prepare all written report materials for meetings.
  • Provide developmental and line-level editing, copyediting, and proofreading on an as-needed basis.
  • Assist the Programs Staff and Director of Operations as necessary with Summer Programs, including on the booking and design of advertisements and the composition and distribution of marketing emails.
  • Participate in the editorial process as a staff reader, providing the first read for 500–600 slush submissions per year.
  • Coordinate with web development firm on completion of updates to new website (anticipated end date: July 31, 2024). Work with Assistant Managing Editor to complete both one-time and regular content, copy, and design updates to website.
  • Assist the Director of Youth Programming as necessary with the Student Associates Program.
  • Perform print, graphic, and web design using Adobe Suite and WordPress as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Editor.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Responsible for supervising the Assistant Managing Editor, Copyeditors, managing editorial intern, and three contest interns. Supervision includes establishing schedules, performing quarterly performance reviews and ensuring a productive, enjoyable environment for reports.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, or a related field, or 2-4 years of related experience. The candidate will also have the ability to handle multiple deadlines simultaneously. Demonstrated experience in project management and working in teams is required. The candidate will also have excellent communication skills and proven attention to detail. Desired areas of experience include prior supervision of a team, publishing and event planning, and content management system and Adobe Suite
