Job Description

Job Title: Correctional Registered Nurse

Location: Midstate Correctional Facility, New York State Department of Corrections

Position Type: Full-Time


Job Summary:

The New York State Department of Corrections and Cell Staff is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Correctional Registered Nurse to join the healthcare team at Midstate Correctional Facility. In this role, you will provide comprehensive nursing care to incarcerated individuals, ensuring their health and well-being while maintaining safety and security within the correctional environment.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Patient Assessment: Conduct thorough health assessments, including physical examinations and health histories for inmates upon intake and as needed.

  • Care Planning: Develop and implement individualized care plans based on assessments and collaborate with healthcare professionals to ensure optimal care.

  • Medication Administration: Administer medications and treatments in accordance with established protocols and monitor patients for effectiveness and side effects.

  • Emergency Care: Respond to medical emergencies, providing immediate care and stabilizing patients before transferring them to higher levels of care when necessary.

  • Patient Education: Educate inmates on health-related topics, including disease prevention, medication management, and chronic illness management.

  • Documentation: Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient care, assessments, and interventions in compliance with facility policies and regulatory requirements.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with physicians, mental health professionals, and other healthcare staff to ensure coordinated and comprehensive care for inmates.

  • Compliance: Adhere to all applicable laws, regulations, and facility policies regarding healthcare delivery and inmate confidentiality.

  • Health Promotion: Participate in health promotion and disease prevention programs, addressing the unique healthcare needs of the incarcerated population.


Qualifications:


  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) from an accredited institution.

  • Licensure: Current New York State Registered Nurse (RN) license.

  • Experience: 1 year of experience is required. Prior nursing experience in a correctional setting, emergency room, or similar environment is preferred but not required.

  • Skills: Strong assessment and critical thinking skills, excellent communication abilities, and the capacity to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

  • Personal Qualities: Compassionate, patient, and able to maintain professionalism in a challenging environment. Must demonstrate cultural competency and sensitivity to the needs of diverse populations.


Physical Requirements:


  • Ability to lift and carry patients and medical equipment.

  • Capable of standing, walking, and moving throughout the facility for extended periods.

  • Must pass a background check and meet any other facility security requirements.
