Position Summary: 

Sovah Danville is seeking a full-time PSC Lab Assistant II to perform technical and clerical functions in one or more sections of the laboratory.  Performs phlebotomy and receives, prepares, and processes patient samples before analysis.  Handles telephone inquiries, and performs computer and billing functions. 

  • Provides registration services; registers patients, reviews and updates demographic and insurance information, copies insurance card, photo ID, etc.
  • Verifies proper patient and/or specimen identification, payer type, and diagnosis code before processing specimens.
  • Assists with receiving, identifying, accessioning, processing, and transporting specimens.
  • Performs clerical duties including answering phones, data entry, and filing.
  • Communicates test results to appropriate healthcare providers.
  • Ensures that specimens are received or accessioned and labeled accurately and completely.
  • Distribute specimens, results, etc., to appropriate departments in a timely manner.
  • Notifies department supervisor of significant problems related to specimens, instruments, or test orders.
  • Assesses sample adequacy and recognizes samples of unacceptable quality; documents and informs client of problem.
  • Print reports as necessary to appropriate locations, ensuring patient confidentiality.
  • Monitors outpatient orders entered into the computer, and assures compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Performs routine blood draws, including venipuncture and finger/heel stick techniques.
  • Labels specimens correctly by recording appropriate information on the collection containers.
  • Collects blood cultures using an aseptic technique.
  • Obtains urine specimens, and labels, and prepares for lab analysis.
  • Collects drug screens according to guidelines and procedures set in the Drug Screen Collection Manuals.
  • Process incoming requisitions and samples according to specimen processing protocols.
  • Centrifuges and stores blood samples for subsequent testing.
  • Maintains adequate stock of supplies; stocks/organizes supplies and phlebotomy baskets and collection stations.
  • Investigates and verifies unusual orders with the units, physicians, and/or reference lab.
  • Assists in the training of students or new employees as directed by the supervisor.

Minimum Education:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
  • Requires flexibility in scheduling and ability to work all shift patterns including weekends and holidays to ensure appropriateness and continuity of care for the patients of Sovah Health Danville.
Required Certifications/Licenses:
  • Heartsaver CPR American Heart Association required.
  • PBT (ASCP or ASPT) or equivalent required within two years of employment preferred
