Metro Transit’s Vehicle Maintenance Division is hiring a skilled Automotive Welder (Transit Metal Constructor) to become an integral part of our team. This is a Term Limited Temporary/Special Duty Assignment. This journey-level position is responsible for fabricating and repairing a variety of ferrous and nonferrous alloy metal structures and equipment. The Automotive Welder will use specialized equipment to weld, design, and repair metal forms.

About the Vehicle Maintenance Division
The Vehicle Maintenance Division takes pride in meeting our customers' expectations for safe, dependable, clean, and environmentally sound vehicles. Metro's bus fleet maintenance takes place at seven bus bases and at our central Component Supply Center, where specialized work is done. The majority of Metro's buses are hybrids, followed by electric trolley, and several battery-electric buses. Metro has long been an innovator in green vehicle technology and plans to transition to battery-electric buses as we move toward our goal of a zero-emission fleet. Our division is committed to working in a timely, cost-effective, and environmentally sensitive manner and values teamwork, communication, diversity, and social justice.

Who may apply and position information:
We are accepting applications from all qualified applicants. This recruitment will be used to fill one (1) Term Limited Temporary/Special Duty Assignment vacancy. In addition, this selection process may be used to generate an eligibility list for future Term Limited Temporary (TLT) and Special Duty Assignment (SDA) positions that may occur in this classification within the Vehicle Maintenance Division. This position will not be eligible for PERS.

As an Automotive Welder (Transit Metal Constructor), you will also:

  • Perform skilled oxyacetylene and electric arc welding and cutting on transit and automotive vehicles and mechanical equipment; able to use plasma cutter.
  • Fabricate and repair various types of mechanical equipment.
  • Perform skilled welding (stick, mig, and tig) in the shop and field on all types of metals and alloys, including soft and low-temperature silver soldering.
  • Fabricate and repair brackets, vehicle frames, pump bases, tanks, panels, tools, shafts, and related mechanical equipment.
  • Interpret drawings and specifications, layout work, mark dimensions, angles, and cutouts on metal plates and pipe.
  • Cut, shape, and weld metal plates, parts, and structural members.
  • Build up metal on shafts, bits, and tools for machining.
  • Shape, punch, drill, and secure metal parts, steel decks, trusses, machinery foundations, brackets, and hand & guardrails; use horizontal and vertical saws.
  • Weld aluminum transmission housing and internal parts using mig and tig welders.
  • Operate heat treat furnaces and temper metal parts.
  • Design and fabricate transport lifting and storage equipment.
  • Straighten warped/damaged parts using hydraulic press, ironwork, punch press, and shear.
  • Adhere to prescribed safety practices, methods, and precautions in lifting and transporting heavy components.
  • Maintain records of orders, completed repairs, time worked, and materials used; enter and extract data using an automated vehicle maintenance system.
  • Able to use Microsoft Office software products (Outlook, Excel, and Word).
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Completion of a two-year community college or trade school welding course, which includes oxyacetylene, arc (stick, mig and tig), is required, as well as two years of journey-level experience OR any equivalent combination of four years of experience and training in the welding trade which provides the applicant with the necessary skills to perform the work of the position.

This position also requires the following:

Knowledge of:

  • Oxyacetylene and electric arc welding
  • The performance characteristics of a variety of metals and alloys
  • Appropriate heat, cold, and related thermal techniques used in the repair, assembly, and disassembly of parts and equipment
  • Industrial safety rules, shop safety rules, and applicable regulations and procedures that apply to a vehicle repair facility
  • Proficiency in all phases of welding

Skill in:

  • Conceptualizing, measuring, and fabricating metal parts, tools, equipment, fixtures, and related metal items
  • Operating metal working tools and equipment
  • Determining required equipment and welding method, applying knowledge of metallurgy, geometry, and welding techniques
  • Welding components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions, on and/or off vehicles
  • Providing a great level of attention to detail and focus on the given task
  • Basic math skills

Ability to:

  • Work from drawings, schematics, specifications, sketches, and from oral and written directions
  • Perform frequent lifting (with assistance) of metal plates, fuel tanks, and oxygen & acetylene tanks weighing up to 200 pounds with assistance from lifting equipment
  • Input and extract data as needed from a computer, including basic ability to use Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Word
  • Work independently and without direct supervision and also work as part of a diverse team
  • Think logically and critically in order to effectively problem-solve and interpret blueprints and sketches
  • Communicate effectively over the phone, email, and in person
  • Obtain fall protection certification and work at heights (roof of the bus)
  • Perform welding while using a respirator
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships

Desired Qualifications:

  • Basic automotive knowledge
  • Knowledge of CAD Design Software
  • Familiarity with CNC Plasma equipment

Necessary Special Requirements:

  • A valid Washington State driver's license and an acceptable driving record are required at the time of hire. Must be able to drive to other Metro Transit bases/KC locations.
  • For this position, it's essential that you furnish your own tools for the job. A list of required tools will be provided during the interview process.

Physical Requirements:
This position requires sustained physical effort, including frequent walking, standing, bending, crouching, kneeling, twisting, climbing, and arm motion involving reaching overhead. You will also be asked to occasionally move and lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds and heavier objects with assistance.

Testing Information
This recruitment includes an in-person test. If invited to test, please bring shop attire/wear what you feel comfortable welding in. Please bring a welding hood. One can be provided if you do not have one.

Interview Information
All interviews will be conducted in person. Those who interview successfully will be placed on an eligibility list for placement into vacancies.

Once a conditional offer of employment has been made, being hired will be contingent on passing all requirements outlined for King County safety-sensitive positions. Those requirements include a valid driver's license with an acceptable five-year driving record, two-year FTA background verification, passing a pre-employment drug screen and physical, and satisfactory reference checks.
