Seattle WA United States Bristol-Myers Squibb Full time

Working with Us
Challenging. Meaningful. Life-changing. Those aren’t words that are usually associated with a job. But working at Bristol Myers Squibb is anything but usual. Here, uniquely interesting work happens every day, in every department. From optimizing a production line to the latest breakthroughs in cell therapy, this is work that transforms the lives of patients, and the careers of those who do it. You’ll get the chance to grow and thrive through opportunities uncommon in scale and scope, alongside high-achieving teams rich in diversity. Take your career farther than you thought possible.

Bristol Myers Squibb recognizes the importance of balance and flexibility in our work environment. We offer a wide variety of competitive benefits, services and programs that provide our employees with the resources to pursue their goals, both at work and in their personal lives.

When you join BMS, you are joining a diverse, high-achieving team united by a common mission.

The Informatics and Predictive Sciences (IPS) mission is to Pioneer, Partner and Predict to drive transformative insights for patient benefit. IPS conducts applied computational research in areas that include genomic, structural and molecular informatics, computational and systems biology, patient selection and translational biomarker research, and broader fields including knowledge science, epidemiology and machine learning—across the full lifecycle of drug discovery and development and across all therapeutic areas at BMS. We do this in close partnership with scientific and clinical experts in the field, both inside and outside the company. We perform innovative science to empower key data-driven decisions across a rich pipeline of next-generation medicines.

We are seeking a highly motivated scientist to join our Imaging AI team in the Informatics and Predictive Sciences (IPS) organization. Imaging AI is responsible for advancing Bristol Myers Squibb’s industry-leading pipeline through development and application of cutting-edge tissue-based image analysis approaches, often in multi-modal context. We collaborate with a broad range of stakeholders including clinical trial scientists, pathologists, computational biologists, and software engineers.

In this role, the applicant will identify and implement strategies of analyzing digital pathology slides using a diverse set of deep learning-enabled workflows: semantic segmentation, instance segmentation, graph neural networks, etc. There will also be close collaboration with colleagues in Applied Machine Learning to build out cutting-edge AI methods that extend our capabilities. The successful candidate will be comfortable evaluating a given project and knowing when to utilize off-the-shelf image analysis platform solutions versus custom developed solutions.

In addition, the successful candidate will contribute to the data and compute infrastructure around imaging research, in close alignment with IT and other stakeholders. This includes high-performance compute, commercial tools and platforms as well as data and annotation management systems.

Responsibilities

  • Hands-on implementation and use of pathology whole slide image analysis tools and technology
  • Collaboratively devise and execute research strategies that drive decision making in pre-clinical and clinical programs
  • Work alongside imaging scientists to manage, prepare and analyze pathology whole slide images to support translational research across multiple disease/therapeutic areas including oncology, immunology, and neuroscience.
  • Active participation in identifying, testing and enabling use of pathology image management and analysis systems, tools, and technology.
  • Coordinate stakeholders, guide/supervise junior researchers, often in a matrixed setting
  • Prepare and present findings from image analysis projects to other groups within BMS and externally at conferences/workshops.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree 8+ years of academic / industry experience
  • Or Master's Degree 6+ years of academic / industry experience
  • Or PhD 4+ years of academic / industry experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or related discipline; or M.S. with 3 or more years of related experience in a university pathology lab or pharmaceutical or biotech company.
  • Proficiency in programming languages (Python, R, etc.) and data analysis tools (Jupyter Notebooks, Pandas, RStudio, etc.).
  • Preferred: Experience with one or more digital pathology analysis software packages; including HALO, Visiopharm, QuPath and/or other image analysis platforms.
  • Experience with high-performance & cloud computing, container strategies (e.g. Docker), developer tools and machine learning lifecycle management tools highly valued
  • Prior experience in developing deep-learning based image analysis workflows for hematoxylin & eosin (H&E), chromogenic immunochemistry (IHC), and multiplexed immunofluorescence (mIF) images preferred
  • Strong problem-solving and collaboration skills, and rigorous and creative thinking.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including an ability to collaborate effectively with lab scientists and pathologists.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and to handle several concurrent, fast-paced projects.
  • Track record of scientific leadership exemplified by peer-reviewed publications, ideally related to pathology image analysis.

This is an on-site position, with flexibility of 50% remote work, based at any of BMS’ research sites: Cambridge (MA), Lawrenceville (NJ), Seattle (WA), San Diego (CA) or Brisbane (CA)

The starting compensation for this job is a range from $129,000 to $177,100, plus incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility). The starting pay rate takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills and where the job is performed.
