Job Summary:

As a member of the West Marine Finance Team, the Tax Manager is responsible The Indirect Tax Manager is responsible for leading all non-income tax related items including, but not limited to compiling sales tax data for preparation and review of monthly sales and use tax returns, performing research and analysis of data included in returns, preparing and processing Waste Tax Returns, annual reports and business licenses. Other responsibilities include month end close reporting, tax journal entries. West Marine operates and files sales tax returns for 240 stores in 38 states and Puerto Rico as well as an international e-commerce website. Sales tax returns are filed for state, county and city sales tax jurisdictions. These returns are of varying numbers per state, county and municipality. This role will have one to two direct reports.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Manage the tax calendar.
  • The Indirect Tax Manager will oversee and perform the preparation and filing of sales tax returns for all of the jurisdictions for which West Marine collects sales tax (including Puerto Rico) using Vertex tax software including, but not limited to payment requests, GL account reconciliations for the related liabilities and responding to, resolving and tracking notices from taxing jurisdictions.
  • Month-end duties include overseeing and participating in preparing reports and monthly journal entries for sales tax ACH debit payments, validating all tax cash payments to bank, preparing various monthly sales tax and consumer use reports for tax group to use in creating monthly tax returns.
  • Other duties will include oversight, preparation and processing of waste tax returns, franchise tax returns, annual reports and defense and management of sales tax audits in conjunction with Tax Director. Other items the role will assist with include the following:
    • Managing communications of tax notices and coordination with other departments and business partners
    • Performing research to validate information for tax-exempt certificates.
    • Responsible for all aspects of store business compliance including, but not limited to business licenses, alarm permit, boat registrations and other compliance matters.
  • Maintenance of tax rules set up in Vertex including Sales Tax holidays, tax area IDs, and product tax mapping.
  • Oversee the business license function to ensure timely, accurate filings.

Education and Experience:

  • 5+ years of experience in tax or accounting required. Should have experience in multi-state sales and use tax compliance and a working knowledge of sales and use tax laws.
  • Five or more years combined accounting/tax experience

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and ensure adherence to filing timelines
  • Strong personal computer skills including Excel, Word, ERP systems and Vertex (or similar) sales tax products
  • Strong communication skills to be able to effectively communicate any risk to Tax Director and other members of management
  • Ability manage and manipulate large amounts of data
  • Experience working with Puerto Rico processing import and sales tax returns, preferred; bilingual a plus
  • Strong computer skills.
