Desired Qualifications:

  • The Line Design Engineer 3 position requires 7-10 years of related experience and an accredited bachelor’s degree or professional engineer license.
  • Responsible for applying engineering processes, design criteria, and software applications to design and construct high-voltage transmission lines (HVTL).
  • Supports estimate preparation, develops design options, and prepares construction specifications.
  • Provide guidance, oversight, and quality assurance reviews for approved contractors as they develop design solutions, cost estimates, and construction packages for outsourced line design jobs.

  • Supporting construction and maintenance teams during day-to-day operations and during emergency restoration of failed equipment
  • Providing quality assurance reviews for PLS-CADD line models and job construction package
  • Estimating material for transmission projects
  • Transmitting construction packages and supporting specifications

Essential Tasks:

  • This position involves completing design packages for high-voltage transmission facilities (poles, towers, conductors, etc.). This individual works closely with other designers, drafters and maintenance personnel to prepare specifications and drawings for the construction department.
  • This individual develops critical detailed schematic drawings by hand or using computers to show the line crew what work will need to be done.
  • This individual may operate company vehicles (or rentals) and use tools such as measuring sticks and wheels, spot lights, hammers, and stakes.
  • Employee spends 20% of time in the field and 80% of time in the office.
  • Office work consists of communicating via email and phone, performing calculations, drafting reports, and creating and reviewing plans.
  • The work week consists of forty hours per week with overtime as needed.

Physical Requirements:

  • Standing at job sites or talking with customers/crew for extended periods of time.
  • Walking on uneven terrain at job sites to drive stakes and measure.
  • Sitting required frequently at desk in office and while driving vehicle.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 30 lbs. Items lifted may include measuring stick, laptop computers, and survey transits.
  • Carrying of these items up to several hundred yards. Most often carries clipboards, specification books, and hand tools.
  • Exerting 20 to 50 lbs of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 lbs of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 lbs of force constantly to move objects.
  • Hand-Arm and Foot-Leg controls required for computer use and operating vehicle for travel.
  • May be required to operate company vehicle 3-4 hours one way to visit job sites.
  • Climbs in and out of company vehicle and occasionally on other crew vehicles.
  • Occasionally stoops and kneels to inspect pole ground line and navigate through dense right of ways.
  • Frequent reaching to type and use computer, to drive, make notes, take measurements, or install stakes.
  • Constant handling of tools, clipboard, books, steering wheel, spotlight, and computer mouse.
  • Constant talking and hearing required to communicate in person and via radio and phone with other engineers, line crew, electricians, contractors, and customers.
  • Near acuity needed while driving, working on computer, reading maps, drawings, and spec books. Far acuity needed while driving and visually inspecting power lines and related equipment.
  • May also use binoculars.
  • Depth perception and field of vision constantly required to safely maneuver in vehicle and on foot on uneven terrain while working around energized lines and equipment.
  • Exposure to all weather extremes while working at job sites
  • Occasional exposure to vibration in work truck due to bumpy roads and right of ways.
  • Availability for storm response can result in long periods of walking, standing, driving and work hours.
  • Use of appropriate PPE required while in the field.
  • Ability to manage under stressful condition.
  • Must make sound decision, for each decision can impact the safety of others.
