About the camp
Bear Creek Aquatic Camp is a traditional overnight summer camp owned and operated by Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana. Located south of Benton, Kentucky, this 183-acre camp has 2.3 miles of shoreline on beautiful Kentucky Lake. Bear Creek offers campers a variety of aquatic sports including sailing, kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing, and swimming. Our program hosts Girl Scouts entering grades 4 through 12 with up to 70 campers per session. Programs are run by paid camp staff and Girl Scout volunteers.

About the role
The Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana is looking for a full-time Waterfront Director to help ensure the ultimate summer camp experience for our campers. The Waterfront Director oversees our swimming related programs, beachfront areas, and swim equipment. The Waterfront Director will train and supervise Waterfront Assistants, Unit staff, and campers in swimming areas and support varying needs around camp. Key functions of this role include creating rotation schedules for lifeguards, planning regular drills, and maintaining safety standards. This role will provide crucial support and will participate in daily non-water related programs throughout the summer. Key accountabilities include staff training, support camp excursions across Kentucky Lake, supervisory responsibilities, and program implementation. The ideal candidate will be invested in developing a camp culture that nourishes the health and growth of campers, staff, and volunteers.

Compensation
The salary for the Waterfront Director (Bear Creek Aquatic Camp) position is $5,000 for the entire seasonal contract.

Staff training will be held May 27 - June 6, with additional training and set-up time for some staff from May 23 - May 25.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Responsible for overall safety of campers and staff using swimming equipment.
  2. Train and supervise Waterfront and Unit staff.
  3. Coach a variety of instructional sessions which include but are not limited to swimming strokes, water safety, and other rescue drills/ safety practice for staff.
  4. Perform routine checks of equipment, facilities, and programs and work with Camp Director and Site Manager to communicate maintenance needs.
  5. Participate as a member of the Director Team to support others when needed and act as Camp Director when Director and Assistant Director are unavailable.
  6. Other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS/ENVIRONMENT

  1. Non-traditional and long work hours are expected.
  2. The Waterfront Director may be asked to sleep in a unit with other staff members separate (but near) campers with restrooms a short walk away.
  3. Daily exposure to various weather conditions, plants, and animals.
  4. Walk/hike several miles daily, at various grades, elevations, and on uneven terrain.
  5. Daily swimming, boating, and life guarding in lake water.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION

  1. Must be First Aid/CPR Certified.
  2. Waterfront Lifeguard certification preferred (but not required prior to start of employment).
  3. Water Safety Instructor certification preferred.
  4. Other certifications and outdoor or boating skills/knowledge are a plus.

EXPERIENCE

  1. 1 year of working in childcare, youth program, or camp.
  2. 1 year of supervisory and administrative experience preferred.
  3. 4 months - 1 year of program development and delivery for adults and children.
  4. Highly preferred: swim instruction experience.

SPECIFIC SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS

  1. 21+ years of age.
  2. Meet state, federal, and ACA requirements for summer camp employment.
  3. Strong communication, written, and public speaking skills.
  4. Adaptable and flexible within a fast-paced working environment.
  5. Organized and consistent.
  6. Provide exemplary customer service.
  7. Able to pull up to an overview of the entire goal and problem solve accordingly.
  8. Comfort and competency while driving automatic trucks and motorized boats.
  9. Must have valid driver's license with a safe driving record meeting company standards.
  10. Swimming proficiency and comfort in all types of water conditions.

  3. Valid driver's license and proof of insurance.
  4. Must complete and be certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR, & AED course prior to start of the first camp session.

  4. Exhibit effective communication skills and provide exemplary customer service to both internal and external customers.
  5. Report incidents of abuse or potential abuse involving campers to the appropriate authorities.
