PRIMARY FUNCTION:

To provide comprehensive mental health care for the students (grades K-12) at First State School and their families in prevention and treatment in collaboration with the school psychologist, nursing staff, educational staff, ancillary staff, and community providers.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:   

  • Provides individual and small group counseling supports using research-based techniques for all students.
  • Collaborates with school-based staff to address needs & barriers related to mental health, behavioral and academic supports.
  • Actively participates in eligibility and IEP meetings.
  • Attends in-service and weekly staff meetings as required.
  • Facilitates referrals to community agencies for student and/or family support.
  • Communicates patients' individual, group and family behaviors to other psychiatric health care team professionals as required.
  • Provides instruction and support activities regarding social emotional curriculums.
  • Comprehends psychiatric diagnoses.
  • Provides support during crisis situations and providing interventions and strategies to remain calm.
  • Demonstrates skills and knowledge necessary to provide care to pediatric patients with a chronic medical illness, including coping with a chronic illness, life stressors, current events
  • Creates an environment that encourages and invites family involvement while respecting the students’ confidentiality rights.
  • Maintains and updates student charts per CCHS guidelines.
  • Assists in PBIS lessons, implementation of the program, coordination of events, review of data
  • Assists in coverage of bus, breakfast, and lunch duty for students.
  • Consults with outsides agencies (i.e., DFS, Mobile Response, Rockford).
  • Conducts at-risk & threat assessments.
  • Develops longitudinal positive relationships and continuity of care with students and families.
  • Assists with care coordination and continuity of care with medical specialty care.
  • Helps identify and address barriers to medical/mental health care.
  • Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices; reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education: Masters in Social Work, MS/MA in Counseling or equivalent masters degree.
  • Licensure: Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Professional Counselors of Mental Health (LPCMH), or another applicable behavioral health licensure required.
  • One to five years of experience providing direct therapeutic care
  • Child & Adolescent experience preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Skill in using and interpreting a broad range of assessments and sharing outcomes with teachers and parents.
  • Knowledge of PBIS, IEPs, BSPs, data collection preferred
  • Knowledge of Federal and State regulations
  • Ability to function as a leader and member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Utilization of evidence-based interventions for counseling
  • Skill in collaborating with community and government agencies
  • Strong working knowledge of community resources, state, and federal programs
  • Knowledge and clinical skills in pediatric and adolescent care.
  • Knowledge of individual group and family therapy.
  • Ability to offer valuable input and planning for multidisciplinary treatment to other health care professionals.
  • Ability to organize program workload and maintain it with minimal supervision.
