Associate Editor, Books for Youth, Booklist Publications

ALA is seeking an Associate Editor to join the Books for Youth team in Booklist Publications, a unit of ALA publishing.
Reporting to the Editor of the Books for Youth section, the Associate Editor will be responsible for writing and editing reviews and features about books for youth and contributing content to Booklist's print and online products in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. The Associate Editor must have a strong background in children's literature, proven writing and editing skills, and the ability to produce written work quickly and accurately. Key responsibilities include the following:
- Write reviews and feature articles about books for children and young adults for all Booklist
- Edit freelance reviews and features about books for youth.
- Plan and participate in Books for Youth webinars, live programs, and additional Booklist publications activities.
This is a regular full-time position based in our Chicago office.
ALA staff are currently working on a hybrid schedule. Please note that although we have a generous telecommuting policy for our employees, we do not have any truly remote positions in states outside of our workplace sites.
ALA currently requires that employees be fully vaccinated as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Proof of vaccination will be required on or before start date.

Starting salary range negotiable from the mid-50s, based on relevant experience. ALA has an excellent benefit package that includes flexible work schedules, medical, dental, generous paid vacation, a retirement annuity and a 35-hour work week. You may also qualify for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF).

Requirements:
Strong children's literature, editorial, and/or publishing background; professional experience in a public or school library, or equivalent experience in publishing or education; proven writing and editing ability, preferably in a children's book-related field; deep familiarity with YA literature helpful but not required. Undergraduate degree in liberal arts or journalism; MLS preferred but not required. Communication skills, including social media and public speaking experience.
