Project Success Academic Skills Coach

Job Summary:

Each semester, The Learning Center matches graduate students with USF students who are in need of additional and continued academic support during the school year; participants are referred to The Learning Center by campus partners, including the Center for Academic & Student Achievement (CASA), Student Disability Services (SDS), and the Athletics Department. Project Success Coaches work individually with students on a weekly, regularly-scheduled basis. They partner with students to tailor their support and accountability methods, aiming to develop study skills and positive academic behaviors, including (but not limited to) time management, prioritization, note-taking, test-taking, critical reading, college-level writing, and goal-setting. Training and resources are provided to Project Success Coaches.

Full Job Description:

Primary Responsibilities

Meet with assigned student(s) on a regular basis to:

* Assist with general study skills development
* Promote process-based learning methods for all courses
* Track progress on activities/projects and keep student(s) on task
* Provide linkage to Learning Center, Writing Center, and Speaking Center services, as needed, for additional support Submit regular progress reports and meeting notes regarding student development and areas of concern
* Deliver academic skill development workshop sessions on campus, as needed (curriculum and materials provided)

Additional Expectations

* Meet 1:1 with the supervisor and attend a group staff meeting on a monthly basis
* Work independently; manage time effectively, balancing employment and academic demands
* Maintain confidentiality about matters such as class standards, student progress throughout the course, and/or student complaints
* Model appropriate professional attitudes and behaviors, and serve as a resource to staff, students, and other members of the USF community

Qualifications

Applicants must be current, full-time USF graduate students with a demonstrated interest in working with students in a mentoring capacity. Applicants should possess a working knowledge of Student Development Theory and Adult Learning Theory, and have at least one year of experience working with students at the college level.

This position requires strong organizational and communication skills, a strong interest in education, strong computer skills, and the ability to work effectively with others. The ability to maintain professionalism under stress is also required. Applicants who are graduate students enrolled in USF's School of Education are preferred. Prior tutoring and/or supervisory experience is also preferred.

Time Commitment and Compensation

Project Success Coaches are hired on a one-semester basis, with the option to return in subsequent semesters based on program needs, availability, and satisfactory performance. Project Success Coaches work in Gleeson Library on the USF Hilltop Campus for a maximum of 10 hours/week at an hourly wage of $22.00/hour. Please note all compensation is taxable.
