Department Overview

Inpatient Lactation services provides service for maternal patients and patient who are lactation, and their infants throughout OHSU and Doernbecher Children's Hospital (DCH). Inpatient Lactation Services is responsible for assessing patient needs, planning and coordinating interventions and consultations for patients who are breastfeeding, expressing human milk for their ill newborn or child, or have needs related to the suppression of lactation.

Function/Duties of Position

$56.55-$82.13 per hour, based on experience (Resource)

Provide lactation consultation services primarily in the Mother Baby Unit, Labor & Delivery, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and Pediatric floors of DCH. They may also provide consultation services or assistance with lactation needs of patient in the adult in-patient medical floors and intensive care units, short-stay surgical, PACU and departments. Some availability for consultation is also required in out-patient pediatric and breastfeeding clinics.

* The lactation RN role requires the ability to form a strong therapeutic relationship with the patient, and through purposeful communication assist the maternal patient in reducing anxiety and increasing their confidence and skill in infant feeding. Working with multi-disciplinary team collaboratively is necessary for the maternal-newborn wellbeing.

Required Qualifications

BSN Graduates: Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from a program accredited by Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA) 30 days before start date.

* ADN Graduates: Associate Degree in Nursing from an accredited program 30 days before the start date.
* Associate degree Nurses required to enroll in BSN program within 3 years of hire and complete within 5 years of hire
* Internal ONA applicants: Associate Degree in Nursing; BSN preferred
* Current, unencumbered Oregon State Registered Nurse License
* BLS at time of hire and must be issued by the American Heart Association (AHA)
* BLS must not expire during orientation
* Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

Additional Details

Usual Orientation Time: Orientation to lactation services is dependent on experience level and is tailored to individual learning. The following guidelines apply.

* IBCLC Specialty Experience: 3-4 weeks
* RN experience, but not in specialty area: 4-6 weeks
* Resource: depends on experience.
