Reports to: Principal, Registered Nurse, (R.N)

Summary Description: Under the supervision of the principal and consulting Registered Nurse, (R.N.) the licensed vocational nurse conducts a Health Service Program at Grow Academy to strengthen and facilitate the educational process by improving and protecting the health status of children and by identification and assistance in the removal or modification of health related barriers to the learning process for individual children. In addition, the school nurse is qualified and prepared to provide assistance at the time of injury or illness.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Promote and protect the optimal health status of children
  • Provide health assessments
  • Screen and evaluate findings of deficiency in vision, hearing, dental, growth, etc.
  • Observe the child for development and health patterns in making nursing assessment and nursing diagnosis
  • Identify deviations in health findings
  • Design and run related professional development sessions for teacher
  • Create 504 plans and manage 504 caseload
  • Triage and coordinate referrals to appropriate health care providers
  • Provide on-going health counseling with students, parents, school personnel, and health agencies
  • Utilize existing health resources to provide appropriate care of students
  • Implement procedures and provide for crisis intervention for acute illness, injury and emotional disturbances
  • Provide direct health education and health counseling to assist students, families, and staff in making a decisions on health and life-styles that affect health

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of nursing practices in school setting
  • Ability to assess, treat, and monitor injuries and illnesses among students
  • Strong organizational and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to teach staff on common first aid practices

Required Education and Experience:
  • A current California Registered Nurse License
  • Working knowledge of the California Education Code, Nurse Practice Act, Health and Safety Code and Business & Profession Code and other state and federal regulations.
  • Knowledge of principles of child development, health, safety and nutrition.
  • A minimum of 1 year LVN experience in an elementary school setting preferred
