GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The Department of Orthopedic Surgery is seeking a full-time research assistant to support their Quality and Patient Safety program. This position will be instrumental in assisting our team with initiatives to measure quality and safety in orthopedic care. This will include analysis of data as well as initiatives to facilitate outcomes data collection and assessment.

The individual will be involved in the data collection, analysis, report preparation to facilitate the analysis of clinical performance on selected quality and safety metrics by various Orthopedic service lines and specialty services. The individual will report directly to the Quality and Patient Safety Assessment Chair and the Quality and Patient Safety Program Manager for the Department of Orthopedic Surgery

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Data collection and analysis

* Provides support for quality measurement involving selected chart audits and/or data collection for ongoing Department-wide initiatives
* Creating and maintaining datasets for ongoing research and improvement initiatives
* Identifies and confirms appropriate procedures to validate data and ensure data quality and integrity
* Perform statistical analysis of data consistent with established methods for analyzing health care quality and patient safety data eg use of run charts
* Uses SAS to generate reports to analyze relationships between real time data and selected performance benchmarks

Project support/management

* Communicates with clinical investigators to understand available quality and patient safety data in relation to orthopedic surgery and opportunities for improvement
* Works with the Orthopedic Surgery Quality and Safety team and other senior staff to develop plans for reporting, analysis and data dissemination
* Responds to the requests for support in designing specific quality improvement projects and data analysis plans

Other administrative duties as assigned

* Assist in grant, abstract, and manuscript preparation
* Participate in team meetings pertaining to quality and patient safety
* Assists with meeting schedules, meeting minutes and agendas as appropriate
* Interacts with the IRB on behalf of the quality and safety team as needed

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

The candidate must possess superior organizational, administrative, time management and communication skills with the ability to interact professionally at all levels.

* Knowledge of statistics and skill in quantitative analysis
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Exceptional attention to detail
* Ability to handle multiple tasks and deadline pressures
* Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters discreetly
* Ability to work both independently and as part of a team and to collaborate with team members
* Proficiency with MS Office Word, Excel and Powerpoint required.
* Interest in public health, health policy, economics, and/or medicine
* Familiarity with electronic health record EPIC desirable
* Previous research experience of 1 or more years and prior experience with health services data (Medicare, Medicaid, Nurses health date, GP data) preferred
* Minimum of a one-year commitment is required, and a two-year commitment is preferred

EDUCATION:

The position requires a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree preferred with a strong background and demonstrated skill in quantitative analysis.

EXPERIENCE:

Familiarity with physician practice models and health care team/environment preferred.

Experience with use of excel and/or statistical programming which may have been gained from coursework or prior research experience.
