JOB DESCRIPTION

Speech-Language Pathologist Assistant

QUALIFICATIONS:

1.Speech-Language Pathology Assistant degree must include or be equivalent to

a.an associate's degree in an SLPA program or

a bachelor's degree in a speech-language pathology or communication disorders program

b.successful completion of a minimum of one hundred (100) hours of supervised field work experience or its clinical experience equivalent and

demonstration of competency in the skills required of an SLPA.

2.Valid South Dakota License as a speech-language therapy assistant granted by the South Dakota Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology.

3.Knowledge of speech, language and hearing disorders.

4.Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.

REPORTS TO: Supervising Speech-Language Pathologist, Principal and Director for Special Education

PRIMARY PURPOSE: Participate in planning and providing speech-language pathology services to students with speech, voice, or language disorders.

EXPECTATIONS OF A SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY ASSISTANT:

1.Seek employment only in settings in which direct and indirect supervision are provided on a regular and systematic basis by an ASHA-certified and/or licensed SLP.

2.Adhere to the responsibilities for SLPs and refrain from performing tasks or activities that are the sole responsibility of the SLP.

3.Perform only those tasks prescribed by the supervising SLP.

4.Adhere to all applicable state licensure laws and rules regulating the practice of speech-language pathology, such as those requiring licensure of registration of support personnel.

5.Conduct oneself ethically within the scope of practice and responsibilities for an SLPA.

6.Actively participate with the SLP in the supervisory process.

7.Consider securing liability insurance.

8.Actively pursue continuing education and professional development activities.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSILITIES:

1.Self-identify as SLPAs to families, students, and staff, and others. This may be done verbally, in writing, and/or with titles on name badges.

2.Exhibit compliance with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulations, reimbursement requirements, and SLPAs' responsibilities.

3.Follow documented treatment plans or protocols developed by the supervising SLP.

4.Plan and provide appropriate individual and group therapy to students consistent with speech-language goals contained in Individual Education Plans (IEP) under the direction of the licensed supervisor.

5.Collaborate with Speech-Language Pathologist to plan and implement activities to improve oral and written language skills of student sunder the direction of the licensed supervisor.

6.Complete documentation of speech-language service time for students on appropriate forms.

7.Comply with polices established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rules and State Board of Examiners Licensing Board for Speech-Language Pathology.

8.Present a positive role model for students and support the mission of the school district.

9.Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors.

10.Comply with all district guidelines and regulations in regard to special education.

11.Respond to needs related to job responsibilities.

12.Assist in the selection of materials, equipment, and other instructional material.

13.Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of students.

14.Establish control and administer discipline according to board policies and administrative regulations.

15.Develop needed professional skills appropriate to job assignment.

16.Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.

17.Articulate the district's mission and goals in the area of speech therapy and support the realization of the district's mission.

18.Demonstrate the use of appropriate and techniques for parent and community involvement.

EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated on a yearly basis by the supervisor and in accordance with provisions of the board's policy on evaluation for professional personnel.
